{"id":23810,"date":"2025-08-26T07:27:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T07:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/23810\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T07:27:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T07:27:08","slug":"european-markets-open-to-close-fed-trump-french-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/23810\/","title":{"rendered":"European markets open to close: Fed-Trump, French politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European stock markets opened sharply lower on Tuesday, pulled down by French equities as traders monitored the potential for a no confidence vote in the government next month.<\/p>\n<p>France&#8217;s CAC 40 index plummeted more than 2% in early deals after the country&#8217;s\u00a0three main opposition parties <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/french-government-risks-collapse-with-budget-confidence-vote-september-2025-08-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said they would not back a confidence vote<\/a> called by Prime Minister Francois Bayrou for Sept. 8 over his budget plans.<\/p>\n<p>European stock futures were already pointing lower as global investors monitored U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s latest attempted intervention in the running of the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s announcement on social media that he had fired\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/federal-reserve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve<\/a>\u00a0Board Governor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/21\/trump-powell-cook-fed-mortgage-fraud.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Cook<\/a> drove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/26\/asia-stock-markets-today-live-updates-nikkei-225-asx-200-kospi-hang-seng-csi-300-sensex-nifty-50.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asia-Pacific markets<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. futures<\/a> lower. Cook said in a Monday statement that Trump did not have the authority to remove her and that she &#8220;will not resign,&#8221; leaving a legal dispute a potential next step.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/trump-fires-lisa-cook-fed-powell.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/107433030-1719336500970-gettyimages-2097696791-POWELL_FED_LISTENS.jpeg\" alt=\"Lisa Cook, governor of the Federal Reserve, speaks during a Fed Listens event in Washington, D.C., on March 22, 2024.\"\/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/trump-fires-lisa-cook-fed-powell.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Trump tells Fed&#8217;s Lisa Cook she&#8217;s fired; she says &#8216;he has no authority to do so&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It follows months of pressure by Trump on the central bank to lower interest rates, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/24\/trump-powell-fed-visit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repeated criticism of and threats to fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Markets rallied late last week after Powell gave a speech which spurred investors to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/25\/markets-are-sure-the-fed-will-cut-in-september-but-the-path-from-there-is-much-murkier.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">price in a September rate cut by the Fed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, shares of German sportswear giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/PUMA-FF\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Puma<\/a> opened 2% lower following a 16% jump on Monday. The gains came after Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-08-25\/pinault-family-is-said-to-explore-options-for-sports-brand-puma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> that its majority shareholder, the billionaire Pinault family, was working with advisors with a view to a potential sale of the firm. Puma declined to comment when contacted by CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a relatively quiet week on the data and earnings front, with a French consumer confidence reading out Tuesday before inflation figures from France, Germany, Italy and other European countries on Friday.
