The Leinster Senior ‘A’ Championship quarter-final between Athlone’s Marist College and Dublin’s Terenure College finished in dramatic fashion this afternoon, with the Westmeath outfit winning on penalties.<\/p>\n

However, there was a hint of controversy about a couple of questionable calls over the course of the match.<\/p>\n

The game would ultimately go all the way to penalties, although the route to that point was contentious one.<\/p>\n

GAA Umpires Clash Over Controversial Calls In Tense Leinster Schools Quarter-Final<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the Marist College would ultimately win this game, there were a couple of moments when the ultimate result was in doubt.<\/p>\n

The first incident came when the Marist thought they had won the game when Terenure sent a long-range free wide at the end of normal time. There was some disagreement among the umpires at the time.<\/p>\n

The referee would ultimately say the ball went over, awarding the two-pointer that levelled the game. It looked like the wrong call.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, there would be another very similar incident at the end of extra-time at the same end of the pitch.<\/p>\n

Terenure had the opportunity to win the game late, this time from play. The umpires would then disagree for a second time.<\/p>\n

The referee eventually ruled out the score, although this one was a bit more difficult to judge on first viewing.<\/p>\n

Considering the close nature of this game and the deciding of the contest via penalties, these decisions are sure to be quite a talking point in the aftermath of the fixture.<\/p>\n

The Marist will advance to the semi-finals, aiming to win this competition for the first time having lost three finals in the 2010s.<\/p>\n
