{"id":239093,"date":"2025-12-18T11:16:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T11:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/239093\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T11:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T11:16:08","slug":"nurse-admits-to-professional-misconduct-over-care-of-patients-at-drogheda-hospital-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/239093\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurse admits to professional misconduct over care of patients at Drogheda hospital \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A nurse has admitted to professional misconduct, poor professional performance and breaches of the code of professional conduct at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nursing-and-midwifery-board-of-ireland\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nursing-and-midwifery-board-of-ireland\">Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland<\/a> (NMBI) fitness-to-practise committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Andrea Capelli, a male nurse who worked at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/drogheda\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/drogheda\">Drogheda<\/a>, Co Louth, at the time of the allegations against him in 2018 and 2019, was censured by the committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He undertook not to practise in an acute setting without notifying the director of fitness to practise beforehand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Solicitor Tom Cochrane, making submissions for Mr Capelli, told the inquiry that the nurse offered an apology to his former colleagues at the hospital, patients and the fitness-to-practise committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said Mr Capelli was completely remorseful and apologetic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Cochrane said his client undertook not to repeat the conduct and to complete a number of courses including regarding the safe administration of medication, dignity at work, law and ethics, and safeguarding and trust in care. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The solicitor told the inquiry that Mr Capelli was very happy working in a non-acute setting \u2013 Beneavin Lodge nursing home in Glasnevin, Dublin \u2013 and had no intention of going back to work in an acute setting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Cochrane also pointed to a number of courses Mr Capelli had completed since 2019, including regarding manual handling. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Capelli was the subject to a number of allegations. Among them was that in November 2018 Mr Capelli flushed a patient\u2019s intravenous cannula even though he had not completed his intravenous (IV) study day and failed to carry out Glasgow coma scale monitoring \u2013 a method of assessing impairment in consciousness \u2013 on a patient. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was also alleged that in April 2019 Mr Capelli sent a message on Facebook to an 18-year-old first-year student nurse, who was on a six-week placement in the Drogheda hospital that read: \u201chi I am Andrea, i can\u2019t add you, no buttons to press, you gorgeous :)\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The student nurse alleged in a statement to the inquiry that Mr Capelli had previously asked her if she was on social media and that she told him that she was. She alleged she received the message on April 16th, 2019, at 11.35pm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Capelli questioned the student nurse on a number of occasions in the hospital as to why she did not respond to his Facebook message. The inquiry heard the student nurse felt uncomfortable and afraid of Mr Capelli as a result and was visibly upset when she told colleagues at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was also alleged  Mr Capelli made comments in the hospital about the student nurse\u2019s appearance with reference to photos of her on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was also alleged  the registrant on or around June 2019 failed to assist a patient, referred to as \u201cMR\u201d, to eat and drink and handled him inappropriately by lifting him by his pyjama bottoms. The inquiry heard that the patient\u2019s daughter, who was present at the time, was shocked at this. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was also alleged that on or around July 28th, 2019, Mr Capelli failed to follow the correct procedure upon the death of patient \u201cJM\u201d, including failing to inform his family promptly of his death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was further alleged  Mr Capelli attempted to put a neck brace on JM in his family\u2019s presence and failed to stop the continuous subcutaneous infusion that allows medicines to be given during palliative care upon the death of JM. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was also alleged that on or around August 2nd, 2019, the registrant failed to administer to another patient at noon medications including intravenous hydrocortisone, a steroid and a salbutamol nebuliser, which  relieves symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease  such as coughing, wheezing and feeling breathless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inquiry heard  Mr Capelli made full admissions the allegations were factual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The committee will now report its decision to accept undertakings to the NMBI, which, as the allegations predate August 2021, is subject to its approval. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A nurse has admitted to professional misconduct, poor professional performance and breaches of the code of professional conduct&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":239094,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[9,10,13415,18,13,14,6,19,17,11,12,15,16,5,39174,7,8],"class_list":{"0":"post-239093","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-drogheda","11":"tag-eire","12":"tag-featured-news","13":"tag-featurednews","14":"tag-headlines","15":"tag-ie","16":"tag-ireland","17":"tag-latest-news","18":"tag-latestnews","19":"tag-main-news","20":"tag-mainnews","21":"tag-news","22":"tag-nursing-and-midwifery-board-of-ireland","23":"tag-top-stories","24":"tag-topstories"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@ie\/115740291201018878","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/239093","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=239093"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/239093\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/239094"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=239093"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=239093"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=239093"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
