{"id":23984,"date":"2025-08-26T09:23:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T09:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/23984\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T09:23:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T09:23:18","slug":"lone-survivor-in-australian-toxic-mushroom-murder-case-feels-half-alive-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/23984\/","title":{"rendered":"Lone survivor in Australian toxic mushroom murder case feels \u2018half alive\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The lone surviving guest of a lunch where three others died after being served food laced with deadly mushrooms told an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/australia\/\">Australian<\/a> court on Monday the actions of host and convicted murderer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/erin-patterson\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/erin-patterson\/\">Erin Patterson<\/a> had left him feeling \u201chalf alive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Patterson was found guilty last month of luring her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Donald Patterson and Gail\u2019s sister, Heather Wilkinson, to lunch at her home and poisoning them with individual portions of Beef Wellington that contained toxic death cap mushrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">A jury also found the 50-year-old guilty of the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Heather\u2019s husband, who survived the 2023 meal at Erin Patterson\u2019s home in Leongatha, a town of about 6,000 people some 135km southeast of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The seriousness of her offences meant Patterson\u2019s sentence could only be life imprisonment, her own barrister said on Monday during a pre-sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Convicted murderer Erin Patterson is escorted out of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Photograph: Martin Keep\/AFP via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Earlier, Mr Wilkinson told a court in Melbourne that the death of his wife had left him bereft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cIt\u2019s a truly horrible thought to live with that somebody could decide to take her life. I only feel half alive without her,\u201d he said, breaking down in tears as he delivered his victim impact statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Wilkinson, a pastor in a local church, spent months in hospital recovering from the poisoning, and said on Monday that he had only narrowly survived. He called on Patterson, who said the poisonings were accidental and continues to maintain her innocence, to confess to her crimes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cI encourage Erin to receive my offer of forgiveness for those harms done to me with full confession and repentance. I bear her no ill will,\u201d he said. \u201cI am no longer Erin Patterson\u2019s victim and she has become the victim of my kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The court received a total of 28 victim impact statements, of which seven were read publicly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Patterson\u2019s estranged husband Simon Patterson \u2013 who was invited to the lunch but declined \u2013 spoke of the devastating impact on the couple\u2019s two children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cThe grim reality is they live in an irreparably broken home with only a solo parent, when almost everyone else knows their mother murdered their grandparents,\u201d he said in a statement that was read out on his behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The extraordinary media interest in the case, which gripped Australia for much of the 10-week trial, had been traumatic for the family, he added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Simon Patterson, the former husband of Erin Patterson. Photograph: Diego Fedele\/AAP Image via AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The current hearing will form part of presiding judge Justice Christopher Beale\u2019s sentencing decision, which is due to be heard on September 8th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cThis is very grave offending and we make no argument that the (longest possible) sentence should be anything other than life imprisonment,\u201d Patterson\u2019s barrister Colin Mandy said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">However, Mr Mandy urged Justice Beale to impose a non-parole period, meaning she would have the possibility of eventual release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">He said Patterson\u2019s \u201cnotorious\u201d reputation would make prison more onerous for her than the average offender, and that with a non-parole period of 30 years she would be 80 before she could even be considered for release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The court earlier heard evidence from Jennifer Hosking, assistant commissioner of Corrections Victoria, which runs the prison where Patterson is being held. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">She said Patterson was currently being kept in isolation for her own safety and was permitted contact with only one other prisoner, who is in jail for terrorism offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The prosecution argues that Patterson should never be released.
