discovered its first undersea gold deposit \u2013 the largest in Asia \u2013 marking a breakthrough as Beijing steps up nationwide exploration for the precious metal.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The discovery, off the coast of Laizhou, in Yantai, Shandong province, lifted Laizhou\u2019s total proven gold reserves to more than 3,900 tonnes (137.57 million ounces) \u2013 about 26 per cent of the national total \u2013 ranking it top in both gold reserves and output in China, Yantai\u2019s city government disclosed this week at a conference on its achievements during the current five-year plan and its plans for the next one.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">However, authorities did not disclose the actual size of the undersea gold deposit.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">It is the latest in a string of gold finds that suggest China\u2019s reserves may be substantially larger than previously estimated.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Last month, the country announced the discovery of its first super-large, low-grade gold deposit in the northeastern province of Liaoning, with confirmed reserves of 1,444.49 tonnes (50.95 million ounces), which the Ministry of Natural Resources described as the largest single gold deposit discovered since the founding of the People\u2019s Republic of China in 1949.<\/p>\n<p>Also in November, officials reported the discovery of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3332600\/china-hits-third-1000-tonne-gold-belt-year-holds-all-treasures?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a gold deposit in the Kunlun Mountains<\/a>, near the western border of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, with estimated reserves exceeding 1,000 tonnes (35.27 million ounces).<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In November 2023, Shandong said it had identified about a quarter of China\u2019s gold reserves, including more than 3,500 tonnes (123.46 million ounces) on the Jiaodong Peninsula \u2013 the world\u2019s third-largest gold mining belt
