{"id":24174,"date":"2025-08-26T11:25:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T11:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/24174\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T11:25:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T11:25:14","slug":"jewellery-informs-facade-for-nikos-koulis-store-in-athens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/24174\/","title":{"rendered":"Jewellery informs facade for Nikos Koulis store in Athens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bureau-de-change\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau de Change<\/a> has created an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/athens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Athens<\/a> store featuring intricate metalwork and an asymmetric window for Greek jewellery designer Nikos Koulis.<\/p>\n<p>Occupying a 1960s building on Voukourestiou Street, the flagship store takes cues from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikoskoulis.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nikos Koulis<\/a>&#8216; geometric jewellery designs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239782 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nikos-koulis-bureau-de-change_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1274.jpg\" alt=\"Facade of Nikos Koulis store in Athens by Bureau de Change\" width=\"1580\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The shopfront features an asymmetric window and aluminium details<\/p>\n<p>Greek architects Katerina Dionysopoulou and Billy Mavropoulos of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.b-de-c.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau de Change<\/a> applied ornate details to both the shopfront and the interior.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We employed local craftsmen, techniques and technologies to create a space that is inspired by Nikos&#8217; creations,&#8221; Mavropoulos told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239790 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nikos-koulis-bureau-de-change_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Facade of Nikos Koulis store in Athens by Bureau de Change\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The design takes cues from Nikos Koulis&#8217; geometric jewellery<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We worked with amazing local makers, metal workers, stone masons and joiners to design every single detail in the space, including the new facade,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point for this facade was the travertine-framed window, shaped to look like two overlapping rectangles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239791 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nikos-koulis-bureau-de-change_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1289.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to Nikos Koulis store in Athens by Bureau de Change\" width=\"1563\" height=\"2364\"  \/>An extruded aluminium door handle is inlaid with gold<\/p>\n<p>The asymmetry extends to other facade elements. An offset marble slab sits underneath, while the surrounding walls are embellished with aluminium details.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The facade takes its proportions from the nearby Athenian city walls and reproduces them in aluminium,&#8221; said Mavropoulos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At points, the aluminium is embossed with a pattern reminiscent of the intricate detailing found on 19th-century jewellery boxes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/06\/01\/azza-fahmy-burlington-arcade-universal-design-studio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/sq-azza-fahmy-london-burlington-arcade-universal-design-studio_dezeen_2364_col_2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Interior of Azza Fahmy boutique in London's Burlington Arcade designed by Universal Design Studio\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Egyptian heritage and craft infuse London boutique by jewellery designer Azza Fahmy\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More geometric details can be glimpsed through the window, giving the shop a multi-layered feel.<\/p>\n<p>These include a mezzanine wrapped in illuminated glass prisms, which create a zigzagging profile.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239792 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nikos-koulis-bureau-de-change_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of Nikos Koulis store in Athens by Bureau de Change\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A mezzanine is wrapped in illuminated glass prisms<\/p>\n<p>The architects describe them as &#8220;an illuminated curtain, creating a sense of mystery about what lies beyond&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For the interior palette, Dionysopoulou and Mavropoulos chose contrasting materials to create a mix of light and dark, with both polished and textural finishes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239793 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nikos-koulis-bureau-de-change_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x1124.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of Nikos Koulis store in Athens by Bureau de Change\" width=\"1792\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Custom furniture includes display cases and a decorative wall mirror<\/p>\n<p>As you enter, you encounter a dark oak floor, silk wall coverings, lacquered wood display cases and other custom furniture pieces, including a green marble table and a decorative wall mirror.<\/p>\n<p>Bevelled glass panels stand in front of a new staircase, leading up to the mezzanine. This level has a lighter, brighter feel, with sculptural chairs and a white carpet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2239801 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nikos-koulis-bureau-de-change_dezeen_2364_col_21-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Mezzanine floor in Nikos Koulis store in Athens by Bureau de Change\" width=\"1578\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The mezzanine has a lighter, brighter feel<\/p>\n<p>Other crafted details include the extruded aluminium door handle, which is folded and inlaid with gold.<\/p>\n<p>The project is among several by Bureau de Change incorporating patterns and motifs.
