{"id":243003,"date":"2025-12-20T16:29:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T16:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/243003\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T16:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T16:29:17","slug":"fianna-fail-election-fiasco-report-bundles-jim-gavin-under-the-bus-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/243003\/","title":{"rendered":"Fianna F\u00e1il election fiasco report bundles Jim Gavin under the bus \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a> project exploded after launch, one question was repeatedly asked of the senior people in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> sent out to bat in the mortifying aftermath. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Who set the ball rolling? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Whose idea was it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Who suggested that the much garlanded former GAA manager was the man to finally restore the pride and presidency of Fianna F\u00e1il?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> or Jim Gavin?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was hardly the football strategist and former Air Corps pilot, who said and did so little during his brief candidature to suggest he had the Right Stuff to win a presidential election?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nobody seemed to know the answer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When the ill-fated enterprise crashed and burned, quiet man Gavin melted back from whence he had come while his erstwhile Fianna F\u00e1il sponsors went into meltdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The party\u2019s keenly anticipated review into the Fianna F\u00e1il fiasco landed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was no \u201csmoking gun\u201d, pronounced the people who have to read these reports the minute they come out and tell the rest of us the upshot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But there was a Top Gun. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And to the deep disappointment of the Taoiseach and his fluent apologists, it was the former pilot and unfortunately forgetful Jim Gavin. He was asked five times, they stressed, if there was any outstanding issue in his recent past to do with a former tenant and he said there was none. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It pained them to point this out, but they can\u2019t be blamed when he said nothing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Easing back on the contrition and their own inept handling of the campaign, they bundled Jim ever so tenderly under the bus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">We must remember, said concerned apologists for Miche\u00e1l Martin, that at the heart of this is a man with a wife and family. Jim maintains his dignified silence and they won\u2019t be rubbing it in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And yet&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Whatever about Fianna F\u00e1il\u2019s train-wreck campaign, it is also difficult to feel any sympathy for him either. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If what is contained in the report is true, Jim Gavin wanted this job and he pitched for it as far back as June. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On June 9th, his old friend and fellow Dublin team-mate Keith Barr approached the deputy leader of Fianna F\u00e1il, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jack-chambers\/\">Jack Chambers<\/a>, suggesting Jim would make a good president. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Six days later, the man himself texted Jack \u201cseeking to follow up on the initial contact\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">So it seems Miche\u00e1l didn\u2019t come looking for Jim: it was Jim who came looking for Miche\u00e1l.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And matters went on from there with meetings taking place over the summer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On August 1st, Jim confirmed to the party\u2019s general secretary that he wanted to put his name forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another month passed before the candidate officially entered the fray, when he wrote to the parliamentary party to seek their support. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOver the last two months, members of the party and the parliamentary party have approached me to ask if I would be willing to put my name forward. I was very honoured to have been approached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But not, according to the report, before he approached the party himself in early June after Keith Barr helpfully sounded out Jack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSince then, I have engaged in thoughtful conversations with people both in the party and in the wider community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Miche\u00e1l was gung-ho for him from the get-go. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he didn\u2019t hold out much hope for the chances of the wily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/billy-kelleher\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/billy-kelleher\/\">Billy Kelleher<\/a>, who decided to make a contest of it by challenging his anointed candidate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On the day Jim went public, the Taoiseach advised journalists at an event in Kerry to treat with great caution reports that Billy had the support of 30 colleagues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He got a bit of a land when the Cork-based MEP got 29 votes despite the leadership lobbying heavily for his opponent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But back to Jim. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It\u2019s not like he was bounced into this calamity, or anything. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">None of them come out well from it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Timmy Dooley, Minister of State with responsibility for Fisheries, Dutch minister of fisheries Jean Rummenie and Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon at the European Fisheries and Agriculture Council in Brussels, Belgium. Photograph: Olivier Hoslet\/EPA Offer of parting gift adds insult to injury as Ireland is shafted at EU fish quotas negotiations<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish fishing industry is in shock following the outcome of last weekend\u2019s marathon European Union quota negotiations at the Agri Fish Council in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Discussions went on long into the night as EU fisheries ministers tried to hammer out a deal. But despite strong protests from Ireland and other small fishing nations, a decision was railroaded through by a power bloc of four larger member states which will see a major reduction in Irish fish quotas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/timmy-dooley\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/timmy-dooley\/\">Timmy Dooley<\/a>, Minister of State with responsibility for fisheries, denounced the \u201cpredatory\u201d move by France, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands as \u201ca fundamental act of betrayal\u201d and told the meeting it was \u201cparticularly upsetting that the charge had been led by those that benefited most from the access to Irish waters every year since \u201883\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Timmy, who headed the Irish delegation, was fuming. As the meeting broke up, EU ministers and their teams of advisers milled about, making the usual small talk as they prepared to leave. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One onlooker observed Catherine Chabaud, the French minister for the sea and fishery, approaching her Irish counterpart with a smile on her face and a gift bag in her hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTimmy!\u201d she cried, offering him a bottle of French wine as a gift. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cNo thank you,\u201d he said politely. \u201cNo thank you. It\u2019s not appropriate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was most taken aback. As were some others in the room who saw the scene unfold. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mme Chabaud persisted. Non? There was a festive, giddy air to proceedings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This might have been because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-healy-rae\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/michael-healy-rae\/\">Michael Healy-Rae<\/a> was wearing a wig. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was at the insistence of his fellow Minister of State, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kevin-boxer-moran\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kevin-boxer-moran\/\">Kevin \u2018Boxer\u2019 Moran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019d be asking him all the time: What were you like with hair? You\u2019d love to know,\u201d said Boxer after the photos surfaced on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He\u2019s been browbeating Michael for months now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI said to him: \u201cIf I bring a wig up to the D\u00e1il you have to wear it\u201d and he kept saying \u201cNo, no, no!\u201d I wanted him to do it on Halloween night so we could put him out on the street to scare people. But he wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But he finally prevailed this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhen he came in with it under the cap, I called him Richie Kavanagh. He\u2019s the spit of Richie Kavanagh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was a big day for the OPW minister as his wife Michelle, son Jamie and his fiance Ali visited Leinster House with his first grandchild, seven-months-old Tilly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey were in the canteen and the wife said: \u201cWill you bring Tilly up to the office? So I brought her across to the chamber for Leaders\u2019 Questions. She sat on my lap and was as good as gold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEverybody took to her because she is full of smiles. John McGuinness was sounding off in the chair and didn\u2019t Tilly look over and take a fit of laughing. They think it\u2019s fun to make personal comments about her for all to see. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She doesn\u2019t always let them away with it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This week, she spoke in the D\u00e1il in favour of a Bill to outlaw fox hunting. She posted video of her comments during the debate on her Facebook page. It was captioned \u201cfox hunting needs to be banned\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man posted back: \u201cAnd you need to stay away from the fridge door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jennifer did a little sleuthing and quickly found out who he is and where he was located.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She phoned him up from her kitchen. And filmed it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a very pleasant tone of voice, she asks about his business and then asked if he is also a nutritionist. \u201cDo you also give heath advice?\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He quickly hangs up. When Jennifer rings back, the call goes to voicemail so she leaves a message. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cYou came on to my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/facebook\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/facebook\/\">Facebook<\/a> page last night and you commented about my weight. I\u2019m just wondering why you thought you should be able to do that, whether or not you had any qualifications on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added: \u201cI also just want to say it is really not cool to do that. So I would ask that the next time you have the urge to troll, please think twice, think about being kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\">Social Democrats<\/a> TD for Wicklow has had a huge response to her video. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI just saw the remark and it was a case of: here we go again. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThen I thought, if he thinks he can come on to my Facebook page and publicly be rude to me, I\u2019ll just ring him and have a chat, one to one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jennifer says she had called up trolls before, but never caught it on video. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSometimes, if people are insulting me on social media, I will go back to them. It depends on how I\u2019m feeling. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSometimes you just don\u2019t want to be dealing with it and sometimes I\u2019ll go back and I\u2019ll just say to them \u2013 do you know it\u2019s not OK to say things like that to people? You don\u2019t have to agree with my position, but don\u2019t be mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A surprisingly large number of people have messaged her privately to apologise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deputy Whitmore feels people have to be reminded that they are on a public forum. One of the reasons she confronts these trolls is because their comments are frequently directed at undermining young women, who don\u2019t tend to fight back. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBeing mean to people has become really normal, and it shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barry Heneghan ends annus mirabilis with a bang<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was a dizzying start to the year for political novice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-heneghan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-heneghan\/\">Barry Heneghan<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And it\u2019s been a dizzying end to the year for him too. But not in the way he would have wanted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Having pulled off an unexpected win in Dublin Bay North by recapturing the independent seat once held by his mentor Finian McGrath, the 26-year-old from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clontarf\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clontarf\/\">Clontarf<\/a> made an explosive entry to national politics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Back in January, Barry found himself right in the thick of things after his decision to support the Government as part of the Michael Lowry led Regional Independents Group. With his forthright manner and jaunty inability to pass a live microphone, he gained an unlikely national prominence within weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With the passing of time, Deputy Heneghan has eased back on the exuberance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clearly, he\u2019s been learning the ropes and is now more cautious in his dealings with the media and more measured in his pronouncements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His dizzying end to 2025 had nothing to do with politics: he got clattered during a rugby match last Saturday and was taken off the field with suspected concussion. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJust like my politics, I went head on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Deputy Heneghan was in the back row for Clontarf last Saturday against Barnhall in Kildare when the collision occurred. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI was very dizzy afterwards and couldn\u2019t concentrate. I didn\u2019t have a clue what was going on, really. They are very particular about these things in rugby, and rightly so.
