Meningitis poses a significant<br \/>\npublic health threat, despite successful efforts to control the disease<br \/>\nglobally. The burden of morbidity and mortality from meningitis remains high, particularly<br \/>\nin low- and middle-income countries and in settings experiencing large-scale,<br \/>\ndisruptive epidemics. Approximately one in five individuals affected by<br \/>\nbacterial meningitis incurs long-term complications, which may result in<br \/>\ndisability and have a profound impact on quality of life. The guidelines are<br \/>\nprimarily intended for health-care professionals working in first- or<br \/>\nsecond-level health-care facilities, including emergency, inpatient and<br \/>\noutpatient services.
