Three decades after its first appearance on the big screen, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge<\/a> remains a defining moment in Indian cinema, a film that reshaped popular culture and romantic storytelling. One of its most enduring images is Shah Rukh Khan<\/a> as Raj, dressed in a rugged Harley Davidson jacket and goggles, an ensemble that instantly transformed him into a nationwide sensation and a symbol of youthful charm. Years later, filmmaker Karan Johar<\/a>, who worked as an assistant director on the project, revisited the fascinating story behind how this now-iconic costume came to be part of the film.<\/p>\n

Speaking on a popular digital platform, Karan shared that the jacket was far from an easy purchase. Along with director Aditya Chopra<\/a> and fellow assistant Uday Chopra, he personally contributed money to acquire the garment, which was considered extremely expensive at the time. The trio chose not to reveal the true price to producer Yash Chopra, fearing that the cost would be deemed unjustifiable. Back in 1994, the jacket was priced at 300 pounds, a sum that would translate into a significantly higher amount by today\u2019s standards. <\/p>\n

To avoid scrutiny, they understated its value, presenting it as a much cheaper item, and pooled together whatever savings they had to make the purchase possible.
Interestingly, Yash Chopra did not question the decision, largely because he was told a far lower figure. This small deception, as Karan later reflected, proved worthwhile, given the massive visual and cultural impact the jacket ultimately had on audiences. It became inseparable from Raj\u2019s persona and contributed greatly to the film\u2019s lasting appeal.<\/p>\n

The challenges did not end with buying the outfit. Since there were no spare costumes available, Karan and Uday took on the responsibility of guarding the entire ensemble. They often kept the jacket, along with the red checked shirt and jeans, close to them even while sleeping, to ensure nothing was misplaced. Aditya Chopra reportedly issued a strict warning, making it clear that losing even a single piece would have serious consequences, which kept everyone on edge.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdi said that if you lose even one thing, then be ready to go back home. So we were very scared..” he said.
Directed by Aditya Chopra in his first venture as a filmmaker, the movie featured Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as Raj and Simran<\/a>, two non-resident Indians who fall in love during a European trip. The story followed Raj\u2019s determined effort to win the approval of Simran\u2019s traditional family, a journey that ultimately cemented the film\u2019s place in cinematic history.
