{"id":245585,"date":"2025-12-22T08:59:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T08:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/245585\/"},"modified":"2025-12-22T08:59:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T08:59:10","slug":"order-of-100-dart-carriages-to-complete-replacement-of-1984-fleet-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/245585\/","title":{"rendered":"Order of 100 Dart carriages to complete replacement of 1984 fleet \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An order of 100 new carriages for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\">Dart rail service<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">the capital<\/a> will allow for the replacement of all original trains, which have been in use for more than 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\">Department of Transport<\/a> has approved funding of \u20ac173.9 million for the latest order for new energy-efficient carriages. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It brings the total number of carriages ordered in recent times to 285, with the overall \u20ac500 million investment set to provide for 57 five-carriage trains to enter service in the coming years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Dart was deployed in 1984 with 80 carriages, 76 of which remain in service. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien and Irish Rail CEO Mary Considine with a new Dart carriage. Photograph: Department of Transport <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The other four were destroyed or damaged beyond repair in a fire in Irish Rail\u2019s Fairview depot in 2001.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish Rail chief executive Mary Considine said the new carriages are a \u201ccrucial order for the continued development of rail services in the Greater Dublin Area\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Considine said the \u201cnew modern fleets will deliver real improvements in customer experience for all Dart users across the expanded network under the Dart+ Programme, and include major accessibility benefits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There will be CCTV aboard, additional bike storage and device-charging on the carriages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Transport Darragh O\u2019Brien said the order demonstrates the Government\u2019s commitment to public transport.
