{"id":248703,"date":"2025-12-24T04:24:25","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T04:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/248703\/"},"modified":"2025-12-24T04:24:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T04:24:25","slug":"cathy-davey-sings-to-turkeys-locked-up-due-to-avian-flu-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/248703\/","title":{"rendered":"Cathy Davey sings to turkeys locked up due to avian flu \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a caravan on a Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\/\">Kildare<\/a> farm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/\">singer-songwriter<\/a> Cathy Davey tunes her guitar and begins to play the chords as she sings \u201cMildred, Mildred, Mildred, lovely little sleepy girl,\u201d swapping her audience of thousands for two rescued turkeys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The two birds, Mildred and Alfreda, arrived at My Lovely Pig Rescue more than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They were raised on different commercial farms and were saved from slaughter last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/christmas\/\">Christmas<\/a> as they were both deemed \u201cdefective\u201d due to severe damage to their feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt just happened that these two girls were lucky enough to be around someone who cared, who tried to find them a safe place,\u201d says Davey.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Turkeys Mildred and Alfreda at My Lovely Pig Rescue. Photograph: Chris Maddaloni <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She is the manager of My Lovely Pig Rescue and owns the farm alongside her husband, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mildred and Alfreda enjoyed roaming the farm. They spent their days facing the trees, singing, eating grass, picking at stones, resting, taking naps and following people around, looking for affection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But in early November, there were a number of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian flu on turkey farms across Ireland. Since then, there have been five positive outbreaks in counties Carlow, Meath, Monaghan, Laois and, most recently, Cavan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As a result, a compulsory housing order for poultry and captive birds was announced by Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon, coming into effect on Monday, November 10th. It is still in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/12\/20\/fota-wildlife-park-reopens-to-the-public-following-bird-flu-outbreak\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fota Wildlife Park reopens to the public following bird flu outbreakOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since then, Mildred and Alfreda have been forced to remain indoors, in a caravan, with access to a covered polytunnel during the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Davey noticed  the birds were feeling down due to being kept inside all day. \u201cThey\u2019re more desperate to get into your arms, they\u2019ll chase you to the door because they don\u2019t want you to leave,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She says all animals will go off their food  when depressed, and their immune system will \u201ctake a knock\u201d, making them more susceptible to infections.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Cathy Davey with Alfreda. Photograph: Chris Maddaloni <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs soon as the avian flu came, they did get a little bacterial infection in their tummy, which was resolved easily enough, but it was a clear indication that they really, really missed going outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The turkeys also stopped singing once they could no longer get out. So instead Davey brings music to them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Davey co-founded the My Lovely Horse Rescue centre, of which My Lovely Pig Rescue is part, with sisters Deborah and Martina Kenny, and has been writing songs for and singing to many of the different animals at the farm for some time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2023\/03\/06\/singer-turned-pig-rescuer-makes-home-for-animals-written-off-as-just-for-food\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Singer turned pig rescuer makes home for animals \u2018written off as just for food\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">My Lovely Horse Rescue was named after the song that featured as Ireland\u2019s Eurovision entry in Father Ted and was also recorded by Hannon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She describes singing to the animals as a \u201cnice way to spend time with them. They really love the acoustics and harmonics. It\u2019s something new for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While being serenaded, the turkeys, Alfreda in particular, fluff up their feathers, a sure sign of happiness, says Davey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">My Lovely Pig Rescue has been operating since 2020.
