{"id":248775,"date":"2025-12-24T05:36:22","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T05:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/248775\/"},"modified":"2025-12-24T05:36:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T05:36:22","slug":"acute-shortage-of-care-workers-amid-ageing-demographics-official-analysis-finds-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/248775\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Acute shortage\u2019 of care workers amid ageing demographics, official analysis finds \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There is an \u201cacute shortage\u201d of care workers against a background of rising demand for care, new analysis has found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\">Department of Health<\/a> published a report entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.gov.ie\/static\/documents\/c68b88d0\/Irelands_Future_Health_and_Social_Care_Workforce.pdf\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/assets.gov.ie\/static\/documents\/c68b88d0\/Irelands_Future_Health_and_Social_Care_Workforce.pdf\">Ireland\u2019s Future Health and Social Care Workforce<\/a>\u201d, which seeks to ensure sufficient future supply of staff in these sectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department\u2019s analysis report said there was an increase in the number of care workers and home carers of 1.8 per cent between 2017 and 2022, with 67,300 staff employed at the end of 2022. More than a quarter \u2013 26 per cent \u2013 were aged 55 years or older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cReplacement demand alone will be a challenge even before looking at the increased demand for these services with our ageing demographics,\u201d the report noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are a range of jobs within this sector, including healthcare assistants, healthcare support assistants and home support workers, who work across multiple areas in acute hospital and community care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShortages in the care workforce can result in older people remaining in hospital awaiting home care packages so they should be viewed as a critical part of a patient\u2019s pathway through our health system and particular attention is needed to ensure the provision of care corresponds to the current and future population need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It added: \u201cIt is important to consider the current public\/private configuration and how that may change based on policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report also highlights Ireland\u2019s reliance on foreign-educated workforce, about which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/world-health-organisation\/\">World Health Organisation<\/a> has raised concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the most recent census, from 2022, about 30 per cent of all workers in Ireland are foreign-born. However, within the health and social care sector this is much higher, with 52 per cent of nurses and midwives, 43 per cent of doctors and 41.3 per cent of long-term care workers being foreign-born or educated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn the absence of significant increases to third-level student intake, large-scale recruitment of foreign educated doctors, nurses and midwives would be required into the future. It is reasonable to presume that all health systems will face a sustained and ongoing shortage of qualified health workers,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs the population ages, our high reliance on migrants to work in care roles leaves us especially vulnerable.
