{"id":25036,"date":"2025-08-26T20:21:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T20:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/25036\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T20:21:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T20:21:04","slug":"families-face-e29-rise-in-electricity-bills-to-cover-cost-of-maintaining-energy-networks-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/25036\/","title":{"rendered":"Families face \u20ac29 rise in electricity bills to cover cost of maintaining energy networks \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Families face paying about \u20ac2.41 a month more for electricity from October 1st to pay for investment in the Republic\u2019s energy networks, regulators confirmed on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That will add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\">\u20ac29 a year to domestic electricity bills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Electricity customers pay standing charges on their bills to cover the cost of maintaining the network that transmits power to homes and businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) said on Tuesday that those charges could increase by \u20ac2.41 a month on average for homes and businesses to cover these costs for 12 months from October 1st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Standing charges vary according to supplier and other factors, but can top \u20ac30 a month currently, or more than \u20ac60 on the two-monthly bills paid by many homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While households can lower bills by cutting back on energy use, they pay the same standing charges irrespective of consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The money is paid to State companies EirGrid and ESB Networks to maintain and extend the systems that deliver electricity from power plants to customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">ESB Networks, part of the ESB Group, will need \u20ac1.34 billion next year while national electricity grid operator EirGrid will need \u20ac1.39 billion, a total of \u20ac2.7 billion, according to the CRU.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Why is Ireland not considered a truly rich country?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In total, this represents a \u20ac190.4 million, or 7.5 per cent, increase on the \u20ac2.53 billion total allocated to the State companies in 2025, the regulator said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The commission said that it had reviewed the companies\u2019 spending plans to ensure that the cost is recovered in a fair and transparent way from customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Electricity suppliers can choose not to pass on all or some of the CRU-sanctioned increase from next October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The agency determines network charges but allows suppliers to decide themselves whether they will absorb or pass on the cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EirGrid is responsible for the national grid, the backbone of the system that transmits electricity from power stations to customers, while ESB Networks has charge of the distribution network that links individual homes and businesses to the grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commissioner Fergal Mulligan said the decision was in line with the regulator\u2019s procedures, to ensure the Republic had a cleaner, reliable electricity supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe review network operators\u2019 investment plans annually to make sure they\u2019re necessary, cost-effective, and will improve electricity services for customers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/07\/03\/consumers-to-face-higher-electricity-costs-amid-networks-investment\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consumers to face higher electricity costs amid networks investmentOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EirGrid and ESB Networks are seeking the CRU\u2019s approval for spending \u20ac19 billion in total from 2026 to 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The regulator is proposing allowing \u20ac14 billion initially, but with scope for up to \u20ac19 billion, depending on the progress both make with their plans to boost the grid and distribution systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A final decision is due on that in December.
