It\u2019s officially the part of the year when doing absolutely nothing is entirely acceptable \u2013 but one thing we do recommend doing is catching up on all of 2025\u2019s best TV shows<\/a>. And fortunately for you, we\u2019ve worked our way through all of them to bring you the ones that score a solid 5 stars. <\/p>\n

If you missed this year\u2019s most talked about series of the year, Adolescence, that\u2019s a very good place to start, but if you\u2019ve already polished it off, do catch up on 2025\u2019s best mystery thriller Down Cemetery Road<\/a>. There\u2019s also Keeley Hawes\u2019 brilliant turn as a not-so-retired assassin to enjoy, and Robin Wright as a mother suspicious of her son\u2019s new partner is truly glorious viewing. <\/p>\n

Bookish whisks us back in time to 1946 where bookshop owner Gabriel Book (Sherlock<\/a>\u2019s Mark Gatiss) seems to be living a quiet life with his wife Trottie (Polly Walker). But he is in fact harnessing a secret or two. Gabriel moonlights as a sleuth, helping the police solve the strangest of crimes and the knottiest of murders with the help of Trottie and their new shop assistant, Jack (Connor Finch). Name a better combination: Suranne Jones, Jodie Whittaker and a heist drama. Co-created by Suranne, the series follows con artists Bert (Suranne) and Sam (Jodie), who have been living in Spain for the last few years, Sam in the rolling hills and Bert in the slightly less idyllic setting of a prison cell. After a decade behind bars, a cancer diagnosis allows Bert to walk free on compassionate discharge – and she has a burning desire to pull off one final job that will prove her worth. It was the most talked about TV series of the year, and deservedly so. Co-creators Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham achieved dramatic miracles in this four-part account of the murder of a teenage girl, Katie Leonard, the subsequent investigation, and the consequences of the horrific crime. It’s worth watching for 15-year-old Owen Cooper’s standout performance alone. Available to watch on Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Essentially, Succession set in a 19th century Dublin brewery – and none the worse for that. Arthur Guinnes (Anthony Boyle) is the eldest, the natural heir, but, being gay in a censorious era, wants to avoid the limelight. Edward (Louis Partridge) has huge ambitions for the company, Benjamin (Fionn O\u2019Shea) is a hopeless drunk and Anne (Emily Fairn) is the smartest of the crop, but dismissed because of her sex. Meanwhile, James Norton steals the show from the Guinness siblings as Rafferty, the dynasty\u2019s fixer, \u201cweapon of control\u201d and swaggering Lothario. Too Much \"too<\/p>\n

Lena Dunham\u2019s first major TV project since the six-series HBO smash hit Girls ended in 2017 is a joy, thanks in large part to Megan Stalter\u2019s sensational turn as Long Island expat Jess, working for an ad agency in London \u2013 and expecting Hoxton Grove Estate to be a stately residence. It’s made all the better by performances Jennifer Saunders and Andrew Scott. Available to watch on Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After the triumph of Slow Horses, another series of thrillers by Mick Herron is successfully adapted. Emma Thompson as private investigator Zo\u00eb Boehm and Ruth Wilson as amateur detective Sarah Tucker are both superb. Happily, they’ve also signed up to a second series. The Last Frontier\"the<\/p>\n
