{"id":251869,"date":"2025-12-26T05:40:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T05:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/251869\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T05:40:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T05:40:08","slug":"california-hit-by-powerful-storm-on-christmas-day-dw-12-26-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/251869\/","title":{"rendered":"California hit by powerful storm on Christmas Day \u2013 DW \u2013 12\/26\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After days of relentless <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/extreme-weather\/t-19020379\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">torrential rains<\/a> leading to mudslides and flash floods, California was hit by another powerful storm on Christmas Day.<\/p>\n<p>The storm on Thursday prompted authorities to issue evacuation warnings and high surf advisories.<\/p>\n<p>An evacuation warning was issued for Wrightwood, a mountain town about 80 miles (130 kilometers) <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-police-arrest-man-suspected-of-starting-deadly-la-fire\/a-74284073\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">northeast of Los Angeles<\/a>, a day after rescuing people stuck in cars during a mudslide.<\/p>\n<p>The storm, driven by an atmospheric river known as &#8220;the Pineapple Express,&#8221; which moves heavy moisture from Hawaii to the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/united-states-of-america\/t-19065189\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a> West Coast, is expected to dump months&#8217; worth of rain in California over a few days.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"75307263\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75307263_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\" Workers work to restore power after severe storms\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>The storm has left thousands of people out of power Image: William Liang\/AP Photo\/picture alliance<\/p>\n<p>The storm and the accompanying\u00a0by torrential rains have\u00a0rendered more than 70,000 people without power on Thursday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, at least two people were reported dead due to heavy rains and strong winds.<\/p>\n<p>Poor weather conditions to continue<\/p>\n<p>While there was a pause in the rain in parts of southern California on Thursday, the rain is going to continue through Friday, according to NWS.<\/p>\n<p>It warned of a &#8220;broad plume of moisture&#8221; producing heavy rain in California on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Numerous flash flooding events are possible. In addition, many streams may flood, potentially affecting larger rivers. The flooding may include debris flows in or near recently burned areas,&#8221; the service said, referring to areas affected by wildfires.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"75307213\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/75307213_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"A car is buried in mud\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; max-height: 0;\"\/>The flash floods have left roads covered in debris and rocksImage: William Liang\/AP Photo\/picture alliance<\/p>\n<p>The NWS has warned that some areas could see winds with gusts of up to 55 miles per hour (88.5 kilometers per hour).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State authorities declared a state of emergency in several counties, including Los Angeles.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not out of it yet. Rain continues to fall across LA County making roadways, waterways and flood channels extremely dangerous.
