{"id":25281,"date":"2025-08-26T22:47:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T22:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/25281\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T22:47:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T22:47:11","slug":"legal-world-mourns-late-court-of-criminal-appeal-judge-declan-budd-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/25281\/","title":{"rendered":"Legal world mourns late Court of Criminal Appeal judge Declan Budd \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The legal world turned out in large numbers for a thanksgiving service for the late retired Court of Criminal Appeal judge Declan Budd at St Paul\u2019s Church in Glenageary, Co Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ceremony followed a cremation service earlier on Tuesday at Mount Jerome Crematorium at Harold\u2019s Cross in Dublin for the retired judge, who died on August 21st aged 81.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A former president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/law-reform-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/law-reform-commission\/\">Law Reform Commission<\/a> from 2000 to 2005, he was described by his son Roland Budd as having a \u201cgreat interest in people\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe was a great encourager of young people in their interests and careers and, for him, the human interactions, social and professional, were always a hugely significant part of his life as a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A foundation scholar of Trinity College Dublin, he studied history and law, was called to the Bar in 1968, took silk in 1981 and was appointed a High Court judge in 1991. Mr Justice Budd was appointed to the Court of Criminal Appeal in 2008 before retiring in 2011.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His son said he \u201cvery much enjoyed reading aloud to his grandchildren\u201d and, to some laughter, highlighted a favourite children\u2019s book, The Highway Rat, about a rat engaged in a \u201cwild crime spree\u201d that \u201cends in a sort of restorative justice scheme involving a steady job in a cake shop\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the service, led by rector of St Paul\u2019s Rev Gary Dowd, prayers were also said by former Archdeacon of Dublin the Ven Gordon Linney, with music by organist Caroline Barnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Justice Budd\u2019s friend David McConnell described him as \u201cour lodestar, our compass, our guide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among the chief mourners were Mr Justice Budd\u2019s children Roland, Una, Aoife and Leila, his sisters Alison and Clodagh, brothers-in-law Palmer and Brian, his grandchildren and his carer Cristina, who looked after him following the death 12 years ago of his wife, Ann.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The mourners also included Capt Ivan McDonald, representing Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin, Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik, Chief Justice Donal O\u2019Donnell, and Supreme Court judges Elizabeth Dunne and Gerard Hogan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Also in attendance were former Supreme Court judges Fidelma Macken, Mary Finlay Geoghegan, Nial Fennelly, Mary Laffoy, John MacMenamin and Harry Whelehan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The mourners included former president of the Court of Appeal George Birmingham, former Court of Appeal judge John Hedigan, former High Court judge Roderick Murphy and his wife, Patricia Murphy, and former High Court judges Michael White and Daniel Herbert. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Also in attendance were former Circuit Court judge Anthony Kennedy and former director of public prosecutions James Hamilton.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The legal world turned out in large numbers for a thanksgiving service for the late retired Court of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":25282,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[40],"tags":[9,10,21031,18,13,14,6,19,17,11,12,21032,15,16,5,2324,7,8],"class_list":{"0":"post-25281","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ireland","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-court-of-appeal","11":"tag-eire","12":"tag-featured-news","13":"tag-featurednews","14":"tag-headlines","15":"tag-ie","16":"tag-ireland","17":"tag-latest-news","18":"tag-latestnews","19":"tag-law-reform-commission","20":"tag-main-news","21":"tag-mainnews","22":"tag-news","23":"tag-supreme-court","24":"tag-top-stories","25":"tag-topstories"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25281","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=25281"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25281\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/25282"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=25281"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=25281"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=25281"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
