It has been made clear in the press for Disney\u2019s \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d that the new film is a turning point for the franchise.<\/p>\n

Not only does the film have to succeed, but it has to succeed very, very well if the studio wishes to proceed with the next two entries that have to be either both made or not at all.<\/p>\n

Cameron did shoot a small portion of the fourth film already \u2013 scenes being shot involving the kid characters in the early scenes ahead of a time jump of quite a few years in the story at some point during the fourth film\u2019s first act.<\/p>\n

But that won\u2019t be shown if the film doesn\u2019t succeed. By the end of its first week yesterday, the film had reached $544 million worldwide \u2013 a very strong start, but the big question with these films is how small those subsequent weekend dropoffs will be.<\/p>\n

If a fourth film doesn\u2019t happen, Cameron tells EW<\/a> he\u2019ll spell out what his plans would\u2019ve been in a big press event:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does. But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out. Here\u2019s what it is. If we don\u2019t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I\u2019ll hold a press conference and I\u2019ll tell you what we were gonna do. How\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Cameron also says he\u2019d love to write the novelisation of the films because he bring so much background detail, but adds that there\u2019s no market for it:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much culture and backstory and lateral detail in these characters that\u2019s been worked out. I\u2019d love to do something that\u2019s at that level of granular detail. [But] there\u2019s no business model for it anymore. People aren\u2019t reading. But anyway, it might be good to have the canonical record of what it was all supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A recent study by both a Florida and London University has indicated that the number of Americans who read for pleasure has dropped 40%.<\/p>\n
