Although Apple unveiled the feature during the Watch Series 11’s debut, it’s not exclusive to the Watch Series 11. So if you have an Apple Watch Series 9 or 10, you can still use the new hypertension tool with the latest software update (Watch OS 26+). This goes for the Ultra 2 and 3, too. The SE line, and models older than Series 9, can’t access the feature.

Kimberly Gedeon

The Apple Watch Series 11 uses the optical heart sensor, the same tool that tracks your heart rate, for hypertension alerts.

No, this hypertension tool doesn’t measure blood pressure directly. In other words, you can’t use this as a replacement for a blood pressure cuff. You won’t get any hypertension-related numbers, like systolic or diastolic readings, that you’d see on a monitor. (For the uninitiated, systolic measures the pressure when your heart contracts, and diastolic measures the pressure when it rests.) Instead, you’ll receive a notification if your data hints at possible hypertension, prompting you to check with your doctor to confirm.

ftwitty//Getty Images

On a blood pressure monitor, the top number is your systolic reading, and the bottom number is your diastolic reading.

Don’t expect your Apple Watch to send alerts right away. It needs a full 30-day stretch of background data, with at least 14 days of solid readings, before it can flag anything. After that first 30-day window wraps, it checks for any patterns that point to possible hypertension and send an alert only if something stands out. After that, the whole cycle resets and a new 30-day review period begins before you can get another alert.

Interestingly, Apple explicitly restricts the hypertension tool to users who have not been previously diagnosed with high blood pressure. This FDA-cleared feature is only meant to flag possible undiagnosed hypertension—not to monitor and manage an existing condition.

Other factors that will disqualify you from using the feature? You must be over 22 years old and you cannot be pregnant.

How do hypertension alerts work?

To put my experience into context, it helps to understand exactly what this feature does behind-the-scenes. Apple uses something called “photoplethysmography” to track volume changes in your blood. This fancy term means that my Apple Watch has been shining light to my skin to measure shifts in my blood volume. An onboard machine-learning algorithm (based on data from over 100,000 participants across a range of studies) analyzes the reflected light to see whether those patterns might indicate possible hypertension.

Hypertension alerts aren’t enabled by default. You need to turn it on yourself by going to the Health app. Next, tap on Search followed by Heart. Scroll down and you’ll find the Hypertension Notifications tab; follow the prompts to turn it on.

Kimberly Gedeon

In the Health app, navigate to Search > Heart > Hypertension Notifications to turn on the high blood pressure tool.

How accurate are the hypertension alerts?

Apple made it clear that the new hypertension tool won’t catch everyone with high blood pressure. According to a clinical study the Cupertino company conducted, the feature caught about 4 in 10 people who have hypertension. Among those with stage 2 hypertension, which is more severe, the feature alerted more than half.

So this means that if you do get a notification, that’s your cue to loop in your doctor. But if you don’t get one, don’t assume you’re in the clear. The traditional blood-pressure cuff and medical expertise are still the gold standard.

This leads me to my own experience with the Apple Watch Series 11’s hypertension alerts—or lack thereof.

Did I receive any hypertension alerts?

I’m uniquely positioned to test Apple’s new hypertension tool. I’ve gotten the “be careful” talk with my doctor regarding hypertension, particularly after getting elevated blood pressure readings. However, I haven’t been officially diagnosed with hypertension.

I waited for the 30-day window to pass for my Apple Watch Series 11 to collect my data. Fortunately, I didn’t receive the dreaded “possible hypertension” alert. Users can log their own blood pressure data manually, so I decided to be proactive and record a reading or two in the Health app. After all, I do own a blood pressure monitor.

Interestingly, when I logged my numbers in the app, I received a message that my readings were “significantly out of range.” Apple avoids making any explicit claims, but the warning was its indirect way of suggesting that my numbers were off.

Kimberly Gedeon

When I logged my blood pressure reading, a message popped up and said, “This measurement is significantly out of range.”

My diastolic number was high. As someone who already owns a Samsung Galaxy Ring and an Oura Ring 4, I’ve seen sleep scores done every which way long before Apple joined the party. Like most sleep score platforms, Apple leaves a lot of the interpretation up to you. Instead of making me sift through charts and graphs, I’d love a clear, “Here’s what to do better tonight” summary. Oura, for example, has an AI advisor that lets you ask it questions about your data.

Like the new hypertension feature, sleep score is not exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 11. It’s available to you as long as you’re running WatchOS 26 on an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer.

Battery life

You may be wondering, if the two show-stopping health features—hypertension alerts and sleep score—are not exclusive to Apple Watch Series 11, why bother upgrading? Well, the improved battery life may tip the scales for you.

If you own an older Apple Watch, it’s highly likely that you’re struggling with its poor energy efficiency. You’re probably charging your smartwatch daily, which can get old fast. Fortunately, Apple claims that it improved the Watch Series 11’s battery life; it now has a claimed runtime of 24 hours, up from the Watch Series 10’s 18-hour runtime.

I tracked the Apple Watch Series 11’s battery life with my typical daily use: an hour of fitness tracking, a steady stream of notifications, light Walkie Talkie use, and general all-day wear. I wore it to track my sleep at night, too. It was charged up to 100% on a Sunday at 2:30 p.m. It died at 12:48 a.m. on the following Tuesday. That’s one full day, 10 hours and 18 minutes.

However, on heavier use days, like when I’m using the Apple Watch to talk to my fiancé, the battery life drops down to about one day. The new Apple Watch Series 11, by the way, now supports 5G (if you get the cellular model). In other words, you should get more reliable signals when the watch needs to maintain a stable connection without your iPhone nearby.

Apple Watch Series 11 review: Final verdict

The Watch Series 11 builds upon Apple’s already robust health lineup—sleep apnea alerts, heart-rate tracking, wrist temperature sensing, blood-oxygen analysis—by adding hypertension notifications and sleep score. Apple is clear that the hypertension feature won’t catch every case, but when it does flag an issue, it can surface a warning many users might otherwise miss. Given that high blood pressure is often symptomless, having a tool that can spot potential red flags is better than having no safeguard at all.

Battery life is also improved, though users wanting more than two days of runtime should look to the Apple Watch Ultra 3, which delivers noticeably longer endurance at a higher price. If you already own a Watch Series 9 or 10, there’s no urgent need to upgrade unless battery life is a priority. But for those coming from an older Apple Watch—or a Watch SE—the Series 11 is a worthwhile step up, unlocking Apple’s latest health and fitness features.

Shop Apple Watch Series 11

airpods

“OK, now they’ve got my attention!” I thought when Apple finally announced its long-rumored hypertension tool alongside the…

[74
10807,131804,343,18,346,19,17,590,131802,82,131803
post-254110","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-technology","tag-content-type-product-review","tag-contentid-5321f390-9a97-4189-b437-352c53c9f808","tag-displaytype-standard-article","tag-eire","tag-hasproduct-true","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-locale-us","tag-shorttitle-apple-watch-series-11-hypertension-alerts","tag-technology","tag-tested
["GET
