{"id":254552,"date":"2025-12-27T19:53:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T19:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/254552\/"},"modified":"2025-12-27T19:53:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T19:53:13","slug":"magic-mushroom-use-rises-despite-concerns-about-little-known-paralysis-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/254552\/","title":{"rendered":"Magic mushroom use rises despite concerns about little known paralysis syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">What started with muscle weakness soon become an inability to walk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Simon Beck watched as someone who had taken a magic mushroom cycled between being strong enough to move around, and feeling too weak to stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It sort of progressively got better and they still had a little bit of weakness the next day after they&#8217;d slept, but it wasn&#8217;t anywhere near as dramatic,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That was pretty interesting because that&#8217;s a fairly unusual way for weakness to present clinically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">What Dr Beck,<strong> <\/strong>a psychedelic harm reduction researcher, was witnessing is known as &#8220;wood-lover paralysis&#8221; within the illicit psychedelic drug-using community, although it&#8217;s not currently described in medical literature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close-up look inside the cup of a white-stemmed mushroom, with yellow outside cap. (iNaturalist: <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/people\/jeremyhegge\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Hegge<\/a>, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/observations\/280250255\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Psilocybe subaeruginosa<\/a>, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-NC 4.0<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Little is known about what exactly happens to users&#8217; bodies or causes the suspected drug-related syndrome, known as a toxidrome, which has often been associated with the consumption of the native Australian hallucinogenic fungi Psilocybe subaeruginosa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Although presentations of the malady appear to be rare, Dr Beck suspected it could be deadly in some circumstances.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It looked like something that could pose a range of risks &#8230; but also the possibility of respiratory depression [low breathing rate] if it was severe enough.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Beck and other researchers are hoping to raise awareness around drug harm reduction for the public and medical professionals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Especially as the use of magic mushrooms and other illegal psychedelic drugs, like LSD, continues to rise in Australia for recreational use and potentially self-medication purposes.<\/p>\n<p>What we know about wood-lover paralysis<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Wood-lover paralysis is named after a native &#8220;magic&#8221; mushroom species (P. subaeruginosa)\u00a0 that grows from woody material in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, \u00a0but also parts of South East Queensland and as an introduced species in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Correct identification of the species, commonly referred to as subs or gold tops, is difficult with several poisonous look-alike mushrooms often found growing in the same habitats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As part of his research at the University of NSW, Dr Beck has been trying to understand the symptoms and potential causes of wood-lover paralysis.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"In dark lighting among leaves and grass blades an illuminated white-stemmed, golden capped mushroom rises. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/8be3d4cfe9eefb392a40d45e103eb728\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Psilocybe subaeruginosa mushrooms are known to grow out of woody material. (iNaturalist: <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/people\/jeremyhegge\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Hegge<\/a>, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/observations\/294999788\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Psilocybe subaeruginosa<\/a>, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/4.0\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-NC 4.0<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Beck and colleagues surveyed 392 magic mushroom users and found that 42 per cent of them <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0041010125002259\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported an experience of weakness <\/a>at least once after consuming fungi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One hundred and fifty-eight of the 165 people who experienced weakness reported it happening after eating wood-growing mushrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Only one person said they experienced weakness after taking the most popular magic mushroom species, Psilocybe cubensis, which grows out of dung.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Beck said respondents described symptoms appearing most commonly within four hours of ingestion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Negative effects<strong> <\/strong>like muscle weakness lasted anywhere from a few hours to up to three days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2025-12-02\/quiz-fungi-mushrooms-death-cap-what-the-duck-toxins\/106009876\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science quiz: How much do you know about fungi?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">There&#8217;s more to mushrooms than toxins. Take our quiz to see how much you know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Beck said the survey was targeted at users who had experienced paralysis, and therefore was not an indication of the general prevalence of the syndrome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian mycologist Alistair McTaggart, from the private company Psymbiotika Lab and who was not involved with the research, said there was still more to learn about the cause of the paralysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He hypothesised<strong> <\/strong>that the cause was an additional tryptamine, a hallucinogen, produced by mushrooms with duplicated genes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr McTaggart said this was because when a gene was duplicated, sometimes the copy would do something completely different to the original gene.<\/p>\n<p>Could wood-lover paralysis kill?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Whether a case of wood-lover paralysis could lead to death is unclear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A Victorian coroner&#8217;s inquest earlier this year was unable to rule out the wood-lover mushrooms as a factor <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-31\/coroners-report-into-wellness-retreat-magic-mushrooms-death\/105594600\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105594600\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the death of 53-year-old Rachael Dixon in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dixon had drunk a brew containing magic mushrooms at an unregulated &#8220;wellness retreat&#8221; that left several other participants with symptoms consistent with wood-lover paralysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Beck shared details with the inquest about two suspected, but unpublished, instances of severe wood-lover paralysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The first was in New Zealand, where a mushroom user had weakness and difficulty breathing, and was later found unresponsive and died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The second was a person in Australia who needed CPR and a breathing tube, but recovered the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Mushroom use by Australians increasing<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Psychedelic drug use appears to be increasing in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The latest National Drug Strategy Household Survey from 2022\u201323 saw the percentage of Australians who used a psychedelic drug rise from 1.6 per cent in 2019 to 2.4 per cent three years later taking the number of people who use these drugs annually up to about 500,000 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mushrooms and psilocybin were the most common hallucinogens used in 2022\u201323 with 1.8 per cent of Australians using them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/15563650.2024.2346612\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A retrospective analysis<\/a> of calls to the country&#8217;s biggest poison information line, in NSW, also saw an increase in psychedelic inquiries from 45 in 2014, to 105 in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Almost half the calls were related to psilocybin, with the majority from hospitals. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Wood-lover paralysis was not recorded specifically, but there were other psychological illnesses and physical problems like vomiting and high heart rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ethnopharmacologist and clinical psychologist Stephen Bright, from Edith Cowan University, said the high cost of available experimental psychedelic treatments<strong>, <\/strong>introduced to Australia in 2023, meant some people sourced drugs themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This increases risk of both wood-lover paralysis and other harms such as sexual assault, in addition to deterioration of the individual&#8217;s mental state due to inadequate after-support,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Which is why it is important that these people access these experimental  treatments through legitimate pathways.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Treatments in clinical settings are not undertaken without a screening process for histories of severe mental health problems, psychosis, heart problems or seizures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Zena Burgess, Australian Psychology Society chief executive, said &#8220;psychedelic-assisted therapy should only be undertaken in an approved setting&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But what about the psychologists whose patients tell them they intend to use drugs like mushrooms illegally?<\/p>\n<p>Psychological advice confronts &#8216;grey areas&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Registered psychologist Carissa Dutton, a James Cook University PhD student, said psychologists were in a tricky situation if their clients were interested in taking illicit<strong> <\/strong>psilocybin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was trying to look for some guidance around where do we [psychologists] stand ethically with providing harm reduction support for this cohort of people and there&#8217;s not a lot of guidance or information out there,&#8221; (Supplied: Carissa Dutton)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Dutton was recently a lead author <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12954-025-01264-2\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on a study that looked at what harm reduction methods were taken by illicit psychedelic drug users<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What we found was that people that use psilocybin for self-exploration or for treatment of mental health were more likely to put in strategies to reduce their risks of harm,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But, she said, more research was needed to understand what harm reduction strategies actually worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t actually have a lot of research around [the question of] do these strategies equal less harm?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><strong>If you or someone you know is in a life-threatening emergency you should call 000.
