Family members and a longtime friend of Chevy Chase are opening up about the undisclosed heart issues that put him in the hospital for five weeks in 2021, according to Variety<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d veteran, now 82, was placed into an induced coma for about eight days after he experienced heart failure, an upcoming documentary revealed. <\/p>\n

The new insight stems from \u201cI\u2019m Chevy Chase and You\u2019re Not,\u201d which is set to premiere on CNN on Jan. 1. It depicts a \u201cbold and deeply human portrait of one of Hollywood\u2019s great enigmas,\u201d according to the outlet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His wife, Jayni Chase, recounted that Chase \u201ccouldn\u2019t explain to me what was wrong,\u201d so they decided to head to the emergency room just before his heart stopped. She disclosed that the comedian was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy<\/a>, a chronic disease of the heart muscle.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can\u2019t pump as much blood out with each beat,\u201d Jayni said in the documentary, Variety reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His daughter, Caley Chase, said that he had \u201cbasically come back from the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor had warned us: \u2018We might not get him back. We don\u2019t know how present he\u2019ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst,\u2019\u201d Caley said. \u201cHe woke up, all he could do was use his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Caley said she knew Chase was his old self after a nurse rearranged some medical equipment: \u201cShe said, \u2018I\u2019m going to have to put this in here.\u2019 And he said, \u2018That\u2019s what she said.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter Aaron, a friend of Chase, said that it took time for him to \u201creorient himself\u201d after the coma, saying \u201cI feel like his memory gaps come from that incident.\u201d Chase admitted that may be the case. <\/p>\n

\u201cHeart failure is what it is,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m fine now. It\u2019s just that it affects your memory, the doctors have told me that. So, I have to be reminded of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase did not previously elaborate on the cause of his illness that led to his hospitalization.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are my first few days home,\u201d he told Page Six<\/a> at the time. \u201cI can only say how happy I am to now be back with my family. I\u2019m feeling good.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the documentary, Chase also explained that he was \u201churt\u201d by his exclusion from any skits during the 50th anniversary special<\/a> of \u201cSNL\u201d in February. The Hollywood star got his big break as one of the original cast members of the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was kind of upsetting, actually,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is probably the first time I\u2019m saying it.
