Spoilers for <\/strong>Avatar: Fire and Ash<\/strong> lie ahead.<\/strong><\/p>\n James Cameron\u2019s Avatar franchise is well regarded for delivering over-the-top action sequences and stunning visual effects. All of that aside, the films also showcase a bit of romance, mostly from Jake and Neytiri. However, those two aren\u2019t the only power couple in the franchise\u2019s latest installment, Fire and Ash, as Col. Miles Quaritch hooks up with a witchy Na\u2019vi named Varang, and their romantic tension is very palpable in one scene involving a tent. Now, Cameron is opening up about crafting that scene and how it almost changed.<\/p>\n In his continued efforts to bring in Jake Sully for the RDA, Quartich forms an alliance with the Mangkwan tribe, led by Varang (played by franchise newcomer Oona Chaplin). He even arms her tribe with weapons Before that, though, Varang feels out Quaritch \u2013 physically and literally \u2013 while exposing him to a hallucinogen and cutting him with a knife. Since Fire and Ash\u2019s release amid the 2025 movie schedule<\/a>, the scene has gone viral, and Cameron has a take on why it\u2019s so interesting to watch:<\/p>\n You have no idea what\u2019s going to happen next, and they\u2019re both fascinating characters and she\u2019s mesmerizing in that scene. \u2018Mesmerizing\u2019 is the word that always comes to mind for me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Honestly, it is hard to look away from the spicy scene (especially if you\u2019re watching the Avatar threequel in IMAX 3D<\/a>). What\u2019s interesting, though, is that James Cameron didn\u2019t initially realize the full breadth of this segment of the film. He went on to explain to THR<\/a> is that he initially believed the ball was in Varang\u2019s court during that meeting, until the Oscar-winning filmmaker realized something later on:<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t quite realize exactly what I\u2019d written for that scene until I [saw the actors perform it]. Then I realized it\u2019s a double seduction. He\u2019s there to get her to do what he wants her to do, then it seems like she\u2019s got him under her thumb, and yet the whole time he\u2019s had a plan and it actually works. So from a writing standpoint, I\u2019m happy with the psychological dynamics of the scene.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Cameron penned the screenplay alongside fellow Avatar veterans Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. As the Titanic helmer mentioned, he was pleased with how Quaritch and Varang\u2019s sensual scene was written on the page. However, it was nearly changed in a big way when the editors sought to essentially cut it in half. That led Cameron to issue the following declaration:<\/p>\n I said: \u2018Guys, you\u2019re about to become unemployed \u2014 put it back, every line.’<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n And that was that. It was probably best that the scene remained intact, and I don\u2019t just base that on the buzz it\u2019s now receiving. That\u2019s also because it provides more insight into who Varang is as a character. She\u2019s arguably become a breakout character from the film, and fans are loving her. All the while, Oona Chaplin is hopeful about continuing<\/a> her character\u2019s journey in subsequent installments. Check out a portion of the tent scene below:<\/p>\n There\u2019s still a question as to whether those final two Avatar movies will actually happen. While James Cameron told CinemaBlend he\u2019s ready to make the fourth and fifth installments<\/a>, he\u2019s waiting to see how Fire and Ash fares at the box office<\/a> before committing to the films. So fans will just have to wait and see what lies ahead for Varang as well as Quaritch (whose fate was left somewhat ambiguous).
