After becoming a dad, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran decided to prioritize his health, with amazing results.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say I lived a pretty unhealthy life from 20 to 30,\u201d the 34-year-old admitted<\/a> in a recent interview with Men\u2019s Health UK. \u201cAnd even though I was doing professionally well, I wouldn\u2019t say that reflected well into my personal life. And I do think that wellness is a direct mirror to mental health and the way you feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheeran explained that he never felt good about himself. \u201cI\u2019d wake up and look in the mirror and just feel gross,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

But more than anything, becoming a father motivated Sheeran take charge of his health and lifestyle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI became a dad,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI remember [daughter] Lyra was two weeks old and I had my best mate round and we had a bottle of wine. I went to bed, then Lyra woke up 20 minutes after I\u2019d fallen asleep. I woke up and I was like, \u2018\u2026 I probably shouldn\u2019t drink if I\u2019m going to feel this dreadful,\u2019 I want to be able to do the night stuff. It all came in at the same time of wanting to be a responsible dad, wanting to feel and look good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, he\u2019s lost nearly 30 pounds and is in the best shape of his life, ditching many harmful habits.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething I never thought I\u2019d do, but here we are. 10 years ago I was a beer guzzling, kebab munching smoker. Having kids really made me knock all those bad habits on the head (excuse the pun), and I got heavily into exercise and moderation,\u201d Sheeran said<\/a> on Instagram.<\/p>\n

His sobriety journey started with participating in a Dry January challenge, and he \u201cjust carried on being sober and exercising.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheeran\u2019s wife, Cherry, also inspired his fitness journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe exercises a lot, so I started going on runs with her,\u201d he said<\/a> previously. \u201cShe eats quite healthily so I started eating quite healthily. She doesn\u2019t drink that much so I wasn\u2019t drinking. I think that all changed things.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no surprise Sheeran began to feel better. According to the Mayo Clinic, physical activity helps<\/a> \u201ccontrols weight,\u201d \u201ccombats health conditions and diseases,\u201d \u201cimproves mood,\u201d \u201cboosts energy\u201d and \u201cpromotes better sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, ditching alcohol and focusing on healthy eating can improve<\/a> both physical and mental health.<\/p>\n

As we head into a new year, now is a great time to take inspiration from Sheeran and make healthy changes in your own life for the sake of your family.<\/p>\n
