{"id":257056,"date":"2025-12-30T00:21:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T00:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/257056\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T00:21:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T00:21:09","slug":"business-man-given-fully-suspended-sentence-for-punching-man-outside-limerick-nightclub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/257056\/","title":{"rendered":"Business man given fully suspended sentence for punching man outside Limerick nightclub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">LIMERICK<\/a> real estate business man who has made a life for himself in Australia avoided a jail sentence for assaulting a man outside Mission Nightclub in Newcastle West in 2013.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tony O\u2019Doherty, 35, formerly of Churchtown Newcastle West, was brought before Judge Colin Daly, on foot of a bench warrant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Limerick Circuit Court heard that Mr O\u2019Doherty followed a man who was removed from the now defunct Club Mission nightclub on February 18, 2013. It was detailed that O\u2019Doherty followed the man out onto the street and hit him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The victim of the assault fell to the ground, unconscious. An ambulance was called for the man and he was brought to University Hospital Limerick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In his summation of the evidence, Judge Colin Daly said that the victim of the assault suffered a brain bleed, and missed five weeks of work due to the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/video\/crime-and-courts\/1973902\/husband-of-woman-killed-in-rathkeale-granted-bail-on-condition-he-stays-away-from-the-town.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Husband of woman killed in Rathkeale granted bail on condition he stays away from the town<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The incident was captured on CCTV and was presented to the accused. At first Mr O\u2019Doherty told garda\u00ed that the hit was in self-defence. However, upon viewing the CCTV footage of the incident, he conceded that the punch was pre-emptive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr Doherty said that his recollection of the incident was a bit hazy and admitted that he had been drinking the night of the assault.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judge Daly said \u201ca single blow can have serious consequences\u201d and that the injury was \u201cserious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The victim said in an impact statement that he suffered psychological trauma from the incident and that he still suffers from headaches after the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previously Mr O\u2019Dotherty paid a \u20ac10,000 bond to the court to ensure his appearance.
