What does it mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With the wet season only just underway, it might make some a little nervous to hear south-east Queensland&#8217;s biggest reservoir \u2013 Wivenhoe Dam \u2013 is just about full.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the people in charge of the dam say water levels are exactly where they need to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Located north-west of Brisbane, Wivenhoe Dam is one of 26 dams operated by Seqwater \u2013 and is by far the biggest of the lot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When deemed &#8216;full&#8217;, the dam can hold just under 1.2 million megalitres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In comparison, the next largest \u2013 Somerset \u2013 is around a third of the size.<\/p>\n<p>Why Wivenhoe?<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial photo of WIvenhoe Dam's floodgates\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ae9004c3948be60d4c87641556270bf2.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Wivenhoe Dam provides drinking water and flood protection for much of the state&#8217;s south-east.(Supplied: Seqwater)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Completed in 1984, Wivenhoe Dam was built with the primary purpose of providing drinking water to the millions of people who live in south-east Queensland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Its secondary function is to mitigate flooding by controlling the flow of both the Brisbane and Stanley Rivers which pass through some of the heaviest rainfall areas in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Data on flooding in the city of Brisbane dating back to the 1890s shows in that regard, it has been very successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the operators of the dam warn that even with the best management strategy in place, Wivenhoe will not hold back the next major flood.<\/p>\n<p>How much water can it hold?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A search online for &#8216;Wivenhoe dam level&#8217; will give you a percentage somewhere between 80-90 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, to use official jargon, that means &#8220;operational supply level&#8221; and is a percentage of its total drinking water supply level, not its actual capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That means that during a flood event, Wivenhoe can hold far more than 1.2 million megalitres.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A finger pointing at a spot on a digitised map of south-east queensland\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/905505b8d97734362e456fe027c29d16.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> The flood operations centre uses complex software to monitor rainfall and river conditions.(ABC News: Will Murray)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Seqwater&#8217;s principal dam safety and operations manager Kevin Bartlett said this is thanks to an additional compartment located above the drinking water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s double the size,&#8221;
