Alan Shearer playfully warned fans not to get too excited about Florian Wirtz scoring his first goal for Liverpool<\/a>, given it was against 20th-placed Wolves. The goal had been a long time coming, six months after the midfielder’s \u00a3116m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.<\/p>\n Just a minute after Ryan Gravenberch broke the deadlock in the match at Anfield on Saturday, Wirtz<\/a> capitalised on Hugo Ekitike’s assertive build-up play to sprint towards the goal and nudge the ball past Jose Sa. His goal turned out to be pivotal as the Reds<\/a> clinched a 2-1 victory over a side yet to secure a win this season.<\/p>\n The situation is so bleak for Wolves<\/a> that one fan, ‘John’, pleaded with The Rest is Football podcast<\/a> hosts Gary Lineker<\/a>, Alan Shearer<\/a> and Micah Richards<\/a> to avoid discussing his club this week.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Premier League stance on scrapping blackout revealed amid Christmas changes<\/a>READ MORE: Liverpool warned Marc Guehi free transfer could end up costing fortune in huge wage claim<\/a><\/p>\n Lineker steered the conversation towards Wirtz’s standout performance, prompting Richards to respond: “Well, we said he was gonna be signing of the season so we need him to score a few more goals!”.<\/p>\n “They spent \u00a3100m and I was giving him the big spiel!’Into half spaces, he turns, he’s got technical ability’ – all these sorts of things, and he scores his first goals, which I’m absolutely buzzing but I want more because we gave him the big build-up!”<\/p>\n Shearer shot back: “Let’s not get carried away, it was only Wolves at home, guys,” before quickly adding: “John, I’m winding you up!”<\/p>\n The Premier League’s record goalscorer was particularly taken with Wirtz’s blossoming connection with one Liverpool colleague.<\/p>\n “I tell you what, there is definitely a thing happening between him and Ekitike – the understanding, ball’s into each other and how they sort of compliment each other,” he admitted. “I thought that was really good yesterday.”<\/p>\n Wirtz has already responded to Richards’ calls for greater attacking output, telling BBC<\/a> Sport over the weekend: “It was very nice the feeling on the pitch with the fans around. I was very happy and I still am.<\/p>\n “I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier scoring and assisting but it was like this and I have to accept it. I just know that it will come and I try to keep going like that.”<\/p>\n The 22 year old reflected on their latest performance, saying: “We played a brilliant first half. Everyone was working hard. In the last 20 minutes, we made it a bit difficult. I cannot explain why. We have to change that.<\/p>\n “That’s how we want to do it. We want to be there and be on top of the table.
