{"id":257621,"date":"2025-12-30T07:25:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T07:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/257621\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T07:25:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T07:25:08","slug":"chinas-hainan-hosts-duty-free-shopping-spree-under-new-customs-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/257621\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Hainan hosts duty-free shopping spree under new customs regime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A customs scheme covering the entirety of Hainan, China\u2019s southern island province, appears to have triggered a surge in consumption since its <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3336928\/chinas-hainan-launches-separate-customs-regime-allowing-tariff-free-imports?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">inception last week<\/a>, with the province\u2019s tourism hub Sanya recording more than 500 million yuan (US$71.25 million) in duty-free sales over five days.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Analysts cautioned, however, that the greater significance of the policy lies less in short-term spending boosts than in whether Hainan can diversify its economy beyond its previous reliance on real estate and establish higher-value growth drivers to rival established consumption hubs Singapore and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">From December 18 to 22, Sanya logged a combined 535 million yuan in duty-free sales, with daily turnover exceeding 100 million yuan for five consecutive days. This was a year-on-year increase of more than 50 per cent, pushing the city\u2019s cumulative duty-free sales for the year past 20 billion yuan, according to the Sanya Municipal Bureau of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cHainan has the potential to grow into a globally influential leisure destination, supported by strong policy incentives such as visa-free access and duty-free shopping, as well as solid physical infrastructure,\u201d said Li Yingtao, a partner at the Shanghai-based consulting firm MCR.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cIn the near term, Hainan is well positioned to capture some high-end consumption that would otherwise flow to Hong Kong or Singapore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s duty exemptions <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3319273\/expansion-tariff-free-access-chinas-hainan-big-boost-trade-beijing-says?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">now cover most categories<\/a> associated with international retail travel, including cosmetics, fashion, electronics, jewellery, food and other lifestyle products.
