The handover of the administration of teachers\u2019 pensions to new provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been delayed to next summer, the Department for Education has confirmed.<\/p>\n

Capita, the outsourcing giant that has run the Teachers\u2019 Pension Scheme for almost three decades, was due to hand it over to Indian IT firm TCS in October this year<\/a>. Capita missed out on the \u00a3233 million, 10-year contract when government re-tendered in 2023.<\/p>\n

But the DfE has now confirmed to Schools Week the final handover has been pushed back to \u201csummer 2026\u201d.<\/p>\n

Its spokesperson would not explain the reason for the delay, nor give further details, but said it was \u201cvital that after almost thirty years of running the Teachers\u2019 Pension Scheme, Capita\u2019s handover to Tata Consultancy Services, is a smooth one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe change in handover date will not impact any pensions or benefit entitlements, and we continue working with both providers to ensure current and retired teachers remain protected in this process.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DfE previously said it would \u201ctransition\u201d the TPS to Tata over two years beginning in October 2023, before the new contract<\/a> began in October this year.<\/p>\n

Firm aims to \u2018digitalise\u2019 TPS<\/p>\n

Capita took over the scheme in 1996, before being re-appointed in 2011 under an \u00a380 million contract. The company was then given a three-year, \u00a332 million extension in 2018, and a further four-year extension in 2021, worth \u00a360 million.<\/p>\n

After Tata was announced as the successful bidder in 2023, the firm\u2019s president for financial products and platforms, Vivekanand Ramgopal, said it was \u201cdelighted\u201d to partner with the DfE to \u201cdigitally transform\u201d the administration of the TPS.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnhanced customer service has been the cornerstone of our platform\u2019s value proposition to clients in the UK pensions industry,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n

The DfE said at the time the new contract would \u201cprovide a more automated, digitalised and personalised service to our members and employers\u201d.<\/p>\n

This included providing \u201cenhanced\u201d access to data and an \u201cimproved ability\u201d to self-service pension processes.<\/p>\n
