The new planet has been named WISPIT 2b.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Dr Christian Ginski, lecturer at the School of Natural Sciences, \u00adUniversity of Galway and second author of the study, said: \u201cWe used these really short \u00adsnapshot observations of many young stars \u2013 only a few minutes per object \u2013 to determine if we could see a little dot of light next to them that is caused by a planet.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop5 indo-26838ee5_paddingbottom3 indo-26838ee5_paddingleft7 indo-26838ee5_paddingright5 indo-26838ee5_paddingtop3 indo-b184cee3_openquote\" style=\"border-left-color:var(--color-primary-base);border-left-style:solid;border-left-width:0\" data-testid=\"inline-quote\">\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_medium indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0\" style=\"color:var(--color-black-base)\">We instead detected a completely unexpected and exceptionally beautiful multi-ringed dust disc<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cHowever, in the case of this star, we instead detected a completely unexpected and exceptionally beautiful multi-ringed dust disc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cWhen we saw this multi-ringed disc for the first time, we knew we had to try and see if we could detect a planet within it, so we quickly asked for follow-up observations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"This image of WISPIT 2b taken with ESO\u2019s Very Large Telescope is the first clear detection of a baby planet in a disc with multiple rings. The first one was discovered in 2018, by a research team also involving Dr Ginski.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">WISPIT 2b, some 430 light years away, is also the first unambiguous planet detection in a multi-ringed disc, making it the ideal laboratory to study planet-disc interaction and subsequent evolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The planet was captured in near infrared light \u2013 the type of view that someone would see when using night-vision goggles \u2013 as it is still glowing and hot after its initial formation phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The team at the Netherlands\u2019 Leiden University and University of Galway captured a spectacular clear image of the young proto-planet embedded in a disc gap. They also confirmed that the planet is orbiting its host star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The planet was also detected in visible light by a University of Arizona team using a specially designed instrument. This led to the new planet being discovered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Dust and gas-rich discs around young stars are the birth cradles of planets. They can look quite spectacular with many different structures such as rings and spiral arms, which researchers believe are related to planets forming within them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The disc around WISPIT 2b has a radius of 380 astronomical units \u2013 about 380 times the distance between Earth and the sun.
