{"id":25880,"date":"2025-08-27T06:06:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T06:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/25880\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T06:06:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T06:06:09","slug":"man-told-gardai-he-would-bite-their-noses-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/25880\/","title":{"rendered":"Man told Garda\u00ed he would \u201cbite their noses off\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A man who was observed \u201cmaking sex noises at random members of the public\u201d and became \u201cabusive\u201d towards Garda\u00ed after he was asked to stop what he was doing has been jailed for a series of offences.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mark James Murphy (41), of no fixed abode, appeared before Dublin District Court charged with a number of offences including criminal damage regarding an incident where he urinated inside a Garda station holding cell and was \u201cbanging and kicking\u201d on the door.<\/p>\n<p>The accused entered pleas of guilty in respect of all of the matters before the court today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The court heard how on the 6th of February last year, Murphy was found \u201cmaking sex noises\u201d as he walked from Fisherman\u2019s Lane onto Talbot Street, Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>After Garda\u00ed approached the accused and asked him to \u201cstop\u201d what he was doing, he became \u201cabusive\u201d and was arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Theft from Penneys, Mary Street<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On the 2nd of May last the accused stole \u20ac270 worth of goods from a branch of Penneys on Mary Street, Dublin before he was stopped by store security staff.<\/p>\n<p>When Garda\u00ed arrived he became \u201cabusive\u201d towards them and made \u201cracist remarks\u201d towards the security staff. All of the stolen property was recovered, the court heard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the 28th of May, he was convicted for failing to appear in court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the 10th of July he was arrested and charged with a breach of Section 24 of the Criminal Justice Public Order Act, an incident for which details were \u201cnot available\u201d, the court heard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the 30th of July he committed another instance of failure to appear before the courts.<\/p>\n<p><b>Threatening and abusive behaviour towards Garda\u00ed<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On the 24th of August Murphy was seen in Howth village \u201cusing a barrier\u201d to hold himself up while in a state of intoxication. When he was approached by Garda\u00ee he threatened to \u201cbite their noses off\u201d while using a slew of \u201cexpletives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When brought to the local Garda station he was \u201cbanging and kicking on the cell door\u201d, which the court heard was not actually damaged, and proceeded to \u201curinate on the floor\u201d of the cell, which warranted an expensive clean up and sanitisation process.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy has 22 previous convictions, the majority of which are for public order and road traffic offences.<\/p>\n<p>On the 8th of May last at Trim District Court he received a one year disqualification and a \u20ac300 fine for attempting to drive while over the legal drug limit.<\/p>\n<p>He also failed to appear before Balbriggan District Court for which he received a 6 months jail sentence suspended for 2 years.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy also received a 4 month sentence suspended for 2 years for an incident of Section 4 Theft with a charge of Section 15 Theft taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that Murphy is currently homeless and that \u201calcohol is the problem\u201d driving his offending.<\/p>\n<p>He previously worked as a courier and has experience helping Enable Ireland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Murphy\u2019s defending counsel argued that her client\u2019s issues arose after the breakdown of his marriage, in circumstances where his new partner has health difficulties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He \u201csuffers from depression\u201d and was \u201chaving a bad day\u201d when offending.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that his 89-year-old grandmother, who raised him, is currently in hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Judge Patricia Cronin sentenced the accused to one month for breaches of Sec 6 of the Public Order Act in relation to the Talbot street incident, two months in prison for the Sec 4 theft from Penneys, 2 months concurrent for failure to appear, two months concurrent for the second failure to appear, and 3 months consecutive for the Howth incident.<\/p>\n<p>The remainder of the charges were taken into consideration, with the charge of breaches of Section 24 of the Criminal Justice Public Order Act struck out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A man who was observed \u201cmaking sex noises at random members of the public\u201d and became \u201cabusive\u201d towards&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":25881,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[9,10,27,715,18,13,14,6,19,17,11,12,15,16,5,21325,7,8],"class_list":{"0":"post-25880","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-breaking-news","9":"tag-breakingnews","10":"tag-courts","11":"tag-crime","12":"tag-eire","13":"tag-featured-news","14":"tag-featurednews","15":"tag-headlines","16":"tag-ie","17":"tag-ireland","18":"tag-latest-news","19":"tag-latestnews","20":"tag-main-news","21":"tag-mainnews","22":"tag-news","23":"tag-public-order","24":"tag-top-stories","25":"tag-topstories"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25880","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=25880"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25880\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/25881"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=25880"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=25880"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=25880"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
