{"id":260417,"date":"2025-12-31T20:12:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T20:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/260417\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T20:12:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T20:12:19","slug":"stormonts-top-challenge-is-severe-underfunding-of-public-services-oneill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/260417\/","title":{"rendered":"Stormont\u2019s top challenge is \u2018severe underfunding of public services\u2019 \u2013 O\u2019Neill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Stormont Assembly\u2019s greatest challenge is the \u201csevere underfunding of public services,&#8221; the First Minister has said.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle O\u2019Neill conceded that relations within the Executive, comprised of four different political parties, are \u201cdifficult and complex\u201d but insisted the \u201cgreatest challenge is the severe underfunding of our public services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She accused the Labour Government of not keeping its promise of a \u201cnew dawn\u201d, and instead \u201ccontinuing along a similar path\u201d as the Conservatives, and reiterated her call for a border poll.<\/p>\n<p>A Government spokesperson said it is providing \u201crecord funding to the Northern Ireland Executive, including \u00a319.3 billion (\u20ac22.1 billion) per year on average through to 2028-29\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In his New Year message, DUP leader Gavin Robinson said Northern Ireland \u201cstands at a juncture\u201d and urged the choosing of \u201ccommon sense over ideology\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/stormont-s-top-challenge-is-severe-underfunding-of-public-services-o-neill.jpg\" alt=\"DUP leader Gavin Robinson at Parliament Buildings, Belfast\" data-title=\"Paul Givan no-confidence motion\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Liam McBurney\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>DUP leader Gavin Robinson criticised \u2018endless divisive border poll agitation\u2019 (Liam McBurney\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>Mr Robinson said: \u201cThe Democratic Unionist Party is unashamedly focused on making Northern Ireland work \u2026 that is where government effort should be directed, not towards performative politics or endless divisive border poll agitation with a random date that has moved from 2016 to 2030 to 2036 like the proverbial goalposts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent months saw the Northern Ireland Executive struggle to find the cash to deliver pay parity with colleagues in the rest of the UK for healthcare workers, teachers and police staff.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been spats between Sinn F\u00e9in and DUP ministers, particularly around funding allocations.<\/p>\n<p>But in her New Year message, Ms O\u2019Neill said London will \u201cnever prioritise the interests of the people of the north of Ireland\u201d, and called for constitutional change.<\/p>\n<p>Almost two years on from the restoration of the Assembly and re-establishment of the Executive made up of ministers from Sinn F\u00e9in, the DUP, UUP and Alliance, Ms O\u2019Neill said the \u201coften conflicting political positions are difficult and complex\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has undoubtedly been challenging but when ministers work together constructively, there has been real progress made,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greatest challenge that we face collectively is, of course, the severe underfunding of our public services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the British Labour Party came to power in 2024, they promised a new dawn after years of Tory cuts and austerity. Yet with a continuing cost-of-living crisis and a recent budget that failed to support workers, families and businesses in a meaningful way, Labour has continued along a similar path to the Tories.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"not-prose\"><p>\n    The future is ours to shape and, by working together, we can make it a brighter one<\/p>\n<p>            Michelle O&#8217;Neill\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAusterity, cuts, and stealth tax increases are all measures that hit those with the lowest incomes, rather than taxing the wealthy. That is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is, London has never and will never prioritise the interests of the people of the north of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly where we can make our own decisions on this island will we be able to build sustainable public services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms O\u2019Neill urged the British and Irish governments to engage in preparations for constitutional change now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSinn F\u00e9in has called for a referendum by 2030, and I will continue to press that case,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ms O\u2019Neill hailed 2026 as \u201cpromising to be an exciting year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelfast will host Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann, a significant moment for Irish culture and language, building on the historic appointment of the North\u2019s first Commissioner for the Irish Language in October,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1767211939_516_stormont-s-top-challenge-is-severe-underfunding-of-public-services-o-neill.jpg\" alt=\"North South Ministerial Council\" data-title=\"North South Ministerial Council\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Clodagh Kilcoyne\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>First Minister of Northern Ireland Michelle O\u2019Neill (left) and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly (Clodagh Kilcoyne\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an Irish saying: Tus maith leath na hoibre \u2013 a good start is half the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us make a strong start to 2026. The future is ours to shape and, by working together, we can make it a brighter one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Robinson said his party\u2019s focus is \u201con the people who rely on functioning public services and a stable economy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthern Ireland deserves leadership committed to improving this place, not running it down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also continue to challenge those who seek to undermine the very foundations of devolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCross-community consent is not an inconvenience to be brushed aside when it becomes awkward. It is a safeguard that protects stability and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a world that is becoming more unstable and uncertain, Northern Ireland\u2019s place within the United Kingdom matters more than ever. It provides security and stability.
