{"id":260912,"date":"2026-01-01T02:42:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T02:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/260912\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T02:42:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T02:42:07","slug":"edinburgh-zoo-penguin-parade-axed-due-to-bird-flu-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/260912\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh Zoo penguin parade axed due to bird flu fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Scottish zoo has cancelled a popular tourist attraction due to an increased risk of avian influenza.<\/p>\n<p>Bosses at Edinburgh Zoo have postponed the Wee Waddle, an event where penguins parade along a walkway next to their enclosure, amid fears bird flu is on the rise in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The event generally takes place several times a week and is described as a \u201cfirm favourite\u201d with visitors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"not-prose\"><p>\n    While we know the Wee Waddle is a firm favourite with our visitors, protecting all of our animals is always our top priority<\/p>\n<p>            Jo Elliot, RZSS\n    <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jo Elliot, curator for the Royal Zoological Society for Scotland (RZSS), said: \u201cDue to an increased risk of avian influenza in the UK we have made the decision to postpone our Wee Waddle for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have strengthened our bio-security measures on-site, increasing the amount of disinfection points to keep all of our bird species safe from the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we know the Wee Waddle is a firm favourite with our visitors, protecting all of our animals is always our top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Scottish zoo has cancelled a popular tourist attraction due to an increased risk of avian influenza.
