{"id":261651,"date":"2026-01-01T13:02:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T13:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/261651\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T13:02:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T13:02:10","slug":"plan-for-cameras-to-catch-motorists-breaking-red-lights-in-dublin-is-shelved-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/261651\/","title":{"rendered":"Plan for cameras to catch motorists breaking red lights in Dublin is shelved \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The installation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/road-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/road-safety\/\">traffic cameras<\/a> at junctions in Dublin city to catch motorists who break red lights has been shelved, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\/\">National Transport Authority<\/a> (NTA) correspondence shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The road safety measure, due to begin in 2025 and long in use internationally, proved successful when deployed for a six-month trial at the junction of Blackhall Place and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/luas\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/luas\/\">Luas<\/a> Red Line in Dublin\u2019s north inner city a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Red-light running has since become \u201cincreasing problem\u201d that was \u201cputting people\u2019s lives at risk\u201d throughout the city, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\/\">Dublin City Council<\/a> head of traffic Brendan O\u2019Brien said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/transport-infrastructure-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/transport-infrastructure-ireland\/\">Transport Infrastructure Ireland<\/a> was in 2024 asked to formulate a national camera-based enforcement strategy focused on red light and bus lane violations as well as speeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last March Minister for Transport <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\">Darragh O\u2019Brien<\/a>, in an answer to a parliamentary question, told the Oireachtas he expected the draft strategy \u201cwould be prepared for public consultation in the coming months\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Pending the finalisation of the national strategy, the Garda, NTA and Dublin City Council were collaborating on the deployment of cameras in Dublin city \u201cwith the intention that one or two locations will be operational this year as part of an interim arrangement\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The safety camera strategy was submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\">Department of Transport<\/a> last May, but has not been published. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Recent NTA correspondence shows that plans to install cameras in the city on an interim basis have now been shelved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to a query from a member of the public last October, asking when the cameras would be introduced, NTA deputy chief executive Hugh Creegan said the Department of Transport was expected to \u201cmake a determination\u201d on the \u201coverall national strategy shortly\u201d. Mr Creegan said: \u201cIt no longer appears appropriate to proceed with developing camera enforcement at a small number of locations in isolation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the letter, released to The Irish Times under the Freedom of Information Act, Mr Creegan said tendering for equipment and services \u201cfor just one or two isolated junctions would not provide a system that would be scalable contractually to cover other junctions, other areas and other offence types\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn order to provide a system that can be scaled and operated appropriately, it is the NTA\u2019s view that it is better to wait until there is an overall camera enforcement strategy in place,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAccordingly, the NTA is awaiting the finalisation of the overall national camera enforcement strategy before proceeding with further camera installation development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, red light cameras will come into operation at the Merrion Gates level crossings in south Dublin by the end of January. Cameras will also be deployed at six more level crossings nationally in the coming months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Brendan O\u2019Brien said the council was eager to see progress on the deployment of red-light cameras at junctions across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cStand at any junction and you\u2019ll probably pick up red-light offenders.
