New Year\u2019s Eve revellers in Birmingham had a devastating end to their year \u2014 and start to 2026 \u2014 after an advertised fireworks display didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

Online social media posts advertised \u2018the biggest NYE party\u2019 would be taking place at Centenary Square, with many heading out to the location for what was to be an exciting night.<\/p>\n

Social media<\/a> footage sees a packed crowd of spectators waiting in anticipation for a show that never went ahead.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long before local police took to the area to get the crowd to disperse and break the news that there was no event taking place.<\/p>\n

Police are reported to have issued a warning during the week to urge attendees that the party was a hoax and would not be going ahead.<\/p>\n

A statement from Birmingham Police warned that there were no official fireworks displays or city-organised events happening.<\/p>\n

They said: \u2018Every year, rumours start to spread online about big celebrations in the city. Unfortunately, these false claims often lead to confusion and disappointment.<\/p>\n

\u2018Last year, for example, we were made aware of posts that circulated about a spectacular show in Centenary Square. Many people believed it, travelled into the city centre, and were left frustrated when nothing happened.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Mirror reports that it was a string of AI-generated articles and images which are behind the confusion, with one reading: \u2018If you\u2019re spending New Year\u2019s Eve in Birmingham, don\u2019t miss the celebrations on Centenary Square which is by far the biggest NYE party in the city.<\/p>\n
