{"id":26382,"date":"2025-08-27T11:40:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T11:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/26382\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T11:40:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T11:40:10","slug":"last-chance-looms-to-hit-2030-climate-action-targets-wind-energy-ireland-warns-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/26382\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Last chance\u2019 looms to hit 2030 climate action targets, Wind Energy Ireland warns \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/budget\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/budget\/\">Budget 2026<\/a> is the last chance for Government to boost investment in time to make a difference to our 2030 Climate Action Plan targets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wind-energy-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wind-energy-ireland\/\">Wind Energy Ireland<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The industry body is urging the Government to boost investment to help the State accelerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/renewable-energy\/\">renewables<\/a>, calling for a new \u20ac100 million fund to support recruitment in key State agencies and continued investment in renewables storage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In its pre-budget submission, Wind Energy Ireland said additional staff were needed to work on climate and energy policy across Government and accelerate renewable energy projects. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The proposed Climate Recruitment Fund would be financed over 10 years, and would increase staffing across agencies such as An Coimis\u00fan Plean\u00e1la, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Marine Institute. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe message we hear consistently from people working on the front lines of delivering renewable energy throughout Government departments, State agencies and public bodies is that they simply don\u2019t have the people and the expertise to deliver as fast as they want to,\u201d said Noel Cunniffe, chief executive of Wind Energy Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBudget 2026 is an opportunity to increase capacity within our State agencies and invest resources in the key building blocks for an Ireland which will be energy independent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is also likely our last chance to make investments that can make a significant difference in trying to hit our 2030 Climate Action Plan targets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A new national map that identifies locations where future offshore wind farms can be developed is due to be completed by the end of 2027. But Mr Cunniffe warned the National Designated Maritime Area Plan would not be completed on time if the resources, the personnel and the expertise were not in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe offshore wind industry has faced challenges with missed deadlines in the past and we cannot afford further delays,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe urge the Government, during its budget negotiations over the coming weeks, to ensure that the funds required to develop this national map are in place early and are enough to do the job properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group is also seeking support in strengthening Ireland\u2019s energy infrastructure to reduce wasted renewable energy, which is estimated to have been worth \u20ac450 million last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDirect investment in Ireland\u2019s energy infrastructure not only helps to build a more resilient grid but also helps to protect consumers from rising energy costs,\u201d Mr Cunniffe said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs part of Budget 2026, we are encouraging the Government to allocate funding to support the development of long-duration energy storage to store renewable energy for when it is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Increased funding to train a workforce for renewable energy, shoring up the planning system to facilitate the review of county development plans to develop more onshore wind energy and the establishment of a port infrastructure fund to support the development of offshore wind resources are also on the list. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Budget 2026 is the last chance for Government to boost investment in time to make a difference to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":26383,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[269],"tags":[10471,18,440,19,17,961,133,4356],"class_list":{"0":"post-26382","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-budget","9":"tag-eire","10":"tag-environment","11":"tag-ie","12":"tag-ireland","13":"tag-renewable-energy","14":"tag-science","15":"tag-wind-energy-ireland"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/26382","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=26382"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/26382\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/26383"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=26382"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=26382"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=26382"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
