US President Donald Trump \u2060has said that the United States had captured \u200dVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and flown them out of the country.<\/p>\n

“The United States of America has successfully carried \u2060out a large scale strike against \u2060Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, \u2060who has \u2060been, along with his \u200dwife, captured and flown \u2060out of the Country”, Mr Trump said in a Truth Social post.<\/p>\n

Earlier President Maduro declared a state of emergency and the government has called for “mobilisation” of the population after a US “attack”.<\/p>\n

Venezuela said it rejected “military aggression” by \u2060the United States, the government said in a statement early today.<\/p>\n

Attacks took place in the capital of Caracas and the states of \u2060Miranda, Aragua and \u2060La Guaira, the statement said, prompting Mr Maduro \u2060to declare \u2060a national emergency and call on \u2060social and political forces to “activate mobilisation plans”.<\/p>\n

The government called the attacks an “extremely serious military aggression” by the United States on the capital Caracas.<\/p>\n

“Venezuela rejects, repudiates, and denounces before the international community the extremely serious military aggression perpetrated by the current government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and people,” Mr Maduro’s government said.<\/p>\n

Airplanes and loud noises could be heard and a column of smoke was visible \u2060in Caracas, Reuters witnesses said, while power was out in the south of the Venezuelan capital, near a major military base.<\/p>\n

The incident began at about 2am (6am Irish time). Videos circulating on social media showed multiple explosions across Caracas.<\/p>\n

Reuters could not immediately verify the videos.<\/p>\n

President Trump has repeatedly promised land operations in Venezuela. He has not publicly detailed his aims, but has privately pressured President Maduro to flee the nation, Reuters has reported.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump said on Monday it would be “smart” for Mr Maduro to leave power.<\/p>\n

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, a US official, speaking on \u200dthe \u2060condition of anonymity, said the United States \u200dis carrying out strikes inside Venezuela.<\/p>\n

The official did not provide details.<\/p>\n

The US has made a major military build-up in the region, including an aircraft carrier, warships \u2060and advanced fighter jets stationed in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump has announced a “blockade” of Venezuelan oil, expanded sanctions and staged more than \u2060two dozen strikes on vessels the US alleges were involved in trafficking drugs in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.<\/p>\n

Last week, Mr Trump \u2060said the United \u2060States had “hit” an area in Venezuela where boats are loaded with drugs, marking the first known time Washington has carried \u200dout land operations in Venezuela since the pressure campaign began.<\/p>\n

He did not \u2060say whether those strikes were carried out by the CIA or not. Other media outlets have reported that the spy agency was behind them.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump has accused the South American country of flooding the US with drugs, and his administration has for months been bombing \u200dboats originating in South America that it alleges were carrying drugs.<\/p>\n
