<\/a><\/p>\nThe scientist behind the project says its greatest benefit could be giving people with epilepsy more confidence about the condition, helping them to avoid any secondary injuries caused by a seizure.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK live with epilepsy, as well as millions around the world.<\/p>\n

Professor Hadi Larijani, who leads the research team at Glasgow Caledonian University, said: \u201cProviding even a few minutes\u2019 warning could be life changing.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal is to empower patients and families with time to act to stay safe and live more independently.\u201d<\/p>\n
He told the Press Association the headset is \u201cvery unique\u201d and they hope to one day release it as a wearable device similar to a cap.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWe want it to be as discreet as possible, to be wireless, light \u2013 it\u2019s a lot of features that none of the other tools right now have.\u201d<\/p>\n
The system was trained using thousands of hours of historical electroencephalography and electrocardiography recordings.<\/p>\n
The researchers also used a custom-made \u201cphantom head\u201d, attaching electrodes to it to simulate a real user.<\/p>\n
By learning to identify the subtle electrical and physiological patterns that precede a seizure, the AI can issue a timely alert, giving patients and families crucial minutes to prepare and stay safe.<\/p>\n
It has an accuracy of up to 95% and the AI algorithm can display its levels of confidence about the chances of an impending seizure.<\/p>\n

Prof Larijani added: \u201cFor families affected by epilepsy, even a brief warning means they can prevent injuries and reduce fear.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is the true measure of success for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
The team are still refining the design for the headset, which they intend to be suitable for children to wear.<\/p>\n
Their initial prototypes have used third-party hardware but they hope to develop their own models.<\/p>\n
Due to the need for regulatory approvals, it will likely be some years before the product becomes widely available.<\/p>\n
Prof Larijani said: \u201cThe most regulated things are medical devices. It takes time to get through the hurdles.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I think we\u2019ve done the initial feasibility testing both on the software and the hardware characteristics.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow we\u2019re looking at a more commercial-ready product that hopefully will be going through the hurdles of the initial accreditation for medical devices.\u201d<\/p>\n
