{"id":266483,"date":"2026-01-04T08:19:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T08:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/266483\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T08:19:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T08:19:13","slug":"funeral-of-industrial-school-whistleblower-john-prior-takes-place-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/266483\/","title":{"rendered":"Funeral of Industrial School whistleblower John Prior takes place this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The funeral of a Kerry Industrial School whistleblower will take place this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Castleisland man John Prior spent 14 years in the notorious St Joseph\u2019s Industrial School in Balloonagh, Tralee in the middle of the last century.<\/p>\n<p>He passed away on New Year&#8217;s Eve following a long illness.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Prior&#8217;s allegations of abuse in a Tralee industrial school helped lift the lid on a hidden culture of brutality in the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>He became an advocate for abuse survivors and was among the first to speak publicly about child abuse in church-run institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Cathaoirleach of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerrycoco.ie\/councillors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne<\/a> MD, Bobby O\u2019Connell has paid tribute to Mr Prior, calling him a trailblazer and a crusader:<\/p>\n<p>John Prior will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiokerry.ie\/death-notices\/john-prior-466162\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repose<\/a> at his residence this evening and tomorrow evening.<\/p>\n<p>His Requiem Mass will take place in Castleisland Parish Church on Monday morning at 11 o&#8217;clock followed by cremation at the Shannon Crematorium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The funeral of a Kerry Industrial School whistleblower will take place this weekend.
