For the humble civil servants who work to deliver his grand ideas, however, it is better \u2013 and, in fact, mandatory \u2013 to stay quiet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In November, the Fine Gael leader\u2019s short spell as Minister for Foreign Affairs was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/22\/how-did-simon-harris-perform-in-his-short-time-as-minister-for-foreign-affairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/22\/how-did-simon-harris-perform-in-his-short-time-as-minister-for-foreign-affairs\/\">given the long-read treatment<\/a> by Irish Times Europe Correspondent Jack Power, who asked sources in the department and in the diplomatic services how they rated their all-action boss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Reviews were mixed: he was well-liked personally and communicated well, but seen to be overly concerned with how his messaging was landing in the press. \u201cOn trade he\u2019d get a better mark than on the pure foreign policy side of things,\u201d a \u201cseasoned\u201d official told our correspondent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It wasn\u2019t long after that message landed in the press that a letter was circulated to heads of mission and senior managers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\">Department of Foreign Affairs<\/a> from Paul Gleeson, the department\u2019s director of communications, reading them a polite version of the riot act. He said it was \u201cimportant to restate\u201d that \u201cofficials at home or abroad should not agree to interviews with Irish media organisations or provide quotes or views to correspondents for Irish newspapers unless these have been cleared by the comms unit at HQ (and, by us, with the secretary general)\u201d \u2013 a reference to the department\u2019s highest-ranking civil servant, Joe Hackett, who directed the missive to be sent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Good relations with journalists are sensible, he continued, but officials should \u201cin all circumstances avoid making any comments of a political nature\u201d. \u201cIt is critically important for the department that this policy is adhered to in all instances,\u201d Gleeson wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Zip it, in other words. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The letter was released under the Freedom of Information Act after The Irish Times learned of its existence from well-placed sources.<\/p>\n<p>Please don\u2019t stop the music<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-concert-hall\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-concert-hall\/\">National Concert Hall<\/a> on Dublin\u2019s Earlsfort Terrace is due a makeover. The storied venue, where erudite patrons can experience works of genius such as Reeling in the Showband Years, The Hits of Andrew Lloyd Webber and More Musical Magic in coming months, revealed a plan for a long-needed revamp in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was expected, in its new \u201cfuture-proofed\u201d form, to be open to the public again in 2029. How likely is that? No official word, but the hall is currently selling tickets for events up to November 2026, and a spokeswoman confirmed that they\u2019ll keeping filling the schedule through the season, taking them to May 2027. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"National Concert Hall at Earlsfort Terrace in  Dublin. Photograph: Dara Mac D\u00f3naill <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There are rumblings in the industry that staff are beginning to look at bookings for the 2027-2028 season too, something not denied by the spokeswoman. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPlanning for the 2027-2028 season is at an early stage and will be informed by the timing of later phases of the redevelopment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">You can\u2019t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs and you can\u2019t do a once-in-a-generation revamp without actually stopping the music for a while. One suspects that if the tubas are still a-blowing in 2028, we could be looking at a delayed completion date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The overall project, which is somewhat larger than a period-appropriate bike shelter but smaller than a world-class children\u2019s hospital, will commence this month with NCH Discover Centre, a \u201cnew, purpose-built hub for music learning, participation and engagement at the heart of the NCH\u201d. When that\u2019s done, on to the concert hall \u2013 for sure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, perhaps sniffing out a scandal akin to the art scanner the National Gallery bought without anywhere suitable to put it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sinn-fein\/\">Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> TD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aengus-osnodaigh\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/aengus-osnodaigh\/\">Aengus \u00d3 Snodaigh<\/a> asked the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Arts Patrick O\u2019Donovan if the NCH had gone and bought a new organ before building works had even begun \u2013 and if so, where they were going to put it in the meantime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fear not, said O\u2019Donovan: \u201cNo organ has been purchased at this stage\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The existing organ is believed to be a few pipes short of a rank by now, to use the technical jargon we just looked up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Seeking reassurance that the remaining pipes would continue to call in the interim, Overheard asked the NCH whether it actually works. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe existing organ at the National Concert Hall, while in working order, requires substantial investment to maintain it at a standard suitable for regular concert performance,\u201d the spokeswoman said. It won\u2019t survive the refit. <\/p>\n<p>Going nuclear<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/state-papers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/state-papers\/\">State Papers<\/a> brought us back to the days when the plain people of Ireland were very actively engaged in campaigns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sellafield\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sellafield\/\">Sellafield<\/a>, the large nuclear plant on the northwest coast of England, not far from the our saintly and then largely oil-, gas- and coal-powered isle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ali-hewson\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ali-hewson\/\">Ali Hewson<\/a> (wife of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/u2\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/u2\/\">U2<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bono\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bono\/\">Bono<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/sellafield-postcards-to-reach-no-10-today-1.421375\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/sellafield-postcards-to-reach-no-10-today-1.421375\">organised a million postcards<\/a> of protest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bertie-ahern\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bertie-ahern\/\">Bertie Ahern<\/a>, ever responsive to popular sentiment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/history\/2025\/12\/30\/bertie-ahern-lobbied-tony-blair-for-more-information-on-sellafield-security-amid-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/history\/2025\/12\/30\/bertie-ahern-lobbied-tony-blair-for-more-information-on-sellafield-security-amid-concerns\/\">wrote with some alarm<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tony-blair\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tony-blair\/\">Tony Blair<\/a> seeking sight of British emergency plans for the Cumbrian site. Sellafield no longer generates power, focusing rather on treating nuclear waste. And overseeing some of that work until recently was an Irish person abroad. Claire Gallery-Strong was awarded an MBE in the UK new year honours list for her services to the nuclear industry, having served most recently at Nuclear Waste Services, the British state quango on a mission to become \u201cthe \u2018one-stop shop\u2019 for all radioactive waste management and disposal solutions for the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gallery-Strong has been across the (concerningly narrow) water a long time, but she was born and raised near Miltown Malbay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\/\">Co Clare<\/a>. She was educated in nearby Scropul at a rural national school that no longer exists, before advancing to the metropolis of Kilmihil (population 472) for secondary school and to Galway for university. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Overheard got in touch to ask if she misses anything from home, and she does: \u201cThe waves crashing against the beach at Spanish Point\u201d, \u201cthe gentle pace of life in west Clare where everyone acknowledges each other as they drive past with a tilt of a finger\u201d, and \u201cTaytoes of course\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her honour recognises her \u201cinnovation and transformation\u201d in the nuclear industry, and for rebuilding a mentoring network, and she is proud to be a role model for women in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem), a cause she has also worked on for many years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWho would thought this of a farmer\u2019s daughter growing up in west Clare from a home where my dad never got to go to secondary school?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris is rarely found wanting for a view to express on pressing public matters.
