{"id":266953,"date":"2026-01-04T15:47:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T15:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/266953\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T15:47:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T15:47:18","slug":"case-study-architect-pierre-koenigs-own-modernist-house-is-selling-for-nearly-5-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/266953\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Case Study\u2019 Architect Pierre Koenig\u2019s Own Modernist House Is Selling for Nearly $5 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\">The personal Los Angeles residence of Pierre Koenig\u2014a mid-century architect behind some of the city\u2019s iconic Case Study Houses, including one of the most recognizable homes in the U.S.\u2014has hit the market for $4.995 million.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\">\u201cPierre Koenig is one of the greatest architects of our time and created the most photographed home in Los Angeles, <a data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/learn\/historic-places\/stahl-house-case-study-house-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"ekxajjj0 css-1xedca9-OverridedLink\">the Stahl House<\/a>, so to own his residence is a trophy unto itself,\u201d said Dalton Gomez of Christie\u2019s International RE | AKG, who is handling the sale of the property with colleague Aaron Kirman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\"><strong data-type=\"emphasis\" class=\"css-11kxzt3-Strong e1ofiv6m1\">More: <\/strong><a data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mansionglobal.com\/articles\/glass-house-that-catches-the-fog-waves-rolling-into-californias-bay-area-lists-for-10-5-million-5359c4f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"ekxajjj0 css-1xedca9-OverridedLink\">Glass House That Catches the \u2018Fog Waves\u2019 Rolling Into California\u2019s Bay Area Lists for $10.5 Million<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">Koenig built the steel home\u2014historically archived as \u201cKoenig House No. 2\u201d by the L.A. Conservancy\u2014for himself and his wife, Gloria, in 1985. Staggered over three-levels, the light-filled three-bedroom residence has an open floor plan with rooms that either flow together or are divided by glass walls. At its center is a three-story atrium, crisscrossed by walkways and staircases that connect the two sides of the upper floors.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">The house \u201cis extremely unique because of the all-metal infrastructure,\u201d Gomez said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">Across its 3,000 square feet, the home has a vast living area, a modern kitchen, a dining space and a library nook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">\u201cThe bedrooms open up to the living space, which then opens to the courtyard, which gives the home this type of jewelry-box feel,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cThe front room was used as [Koenig\u2019s] office,\u201d he added, and the space is still intact. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to think what properties and work he created in that office.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-ad-label css-1ayil5r\" data-testid=\"ad-container-label\">Advertisement &#8211; Scroll to Continue<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">For potential buyers, the most appealing part of the home could be that \u201cit comes with bragging rights that it was chosen by Pierre to be the space he lived and created in for so many years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">The house remained in Koenig\u2019s family for some time after his death, and was restored by his stepchildren. It last changed hands in 2017 for $3.46 million. The owners couldn\u2019t be reached for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">Koenig, who was also a professor of architecture at the University of Southern California, died in 2004 at the age of 78. His \u201csleek glass-and-steel houses became emblems of the progressive values of Postwar suburbia,\u201d the <a data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2004-apr-06-me-koenig6-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"ekxajjj0 css-1xedca9-OverridedLink\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> wrote in his obituary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">He was integral in the creation of the city\u2019s Case Study Houses, which were experiments in American residential architecture sponsored by the now-defunct Arts &amp; Architecture magazine.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">Prominent architects like Koenig, along with Charles and Ray Eames, A. Quincy Jones and Ralph Rapson, were challenged to design and build replicable, inexpensive and efficient model homes as the U.S faced a housing boom caused by the return of millions of soldiers following the end of World War II.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">Koenig\u2019s Case Study House <a data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mansionglobal.com\/articles\/famed-los-angeles-case-study-house-listed-for-3-6-million-111006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"ekxajjj0 css-1xedca9-OverridedLink\">No. 21<\/a>, the Bailey House, and No. 22, the Stahl House, are possibly the most famous of them all.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"paragraph\" data=\"[object Object]\" data-testid=\"paragraph\" class=\"e152o6gh0 css-1hvarng-StyledParagraph\">The Stahl House, which in 2013 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1959 and has since been the backdrop in numerous fashion shoots, films, and advertising campaigns.
