Like many engineers at the company a few years ago, his work had nothing to do with large language models or AI safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#8217;t qualified for an <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/ai\/artificial-intelligence\/looking-to-be-an-ai-expert-in-2025-check-top-job-roles-salaries-and-industry-trends-11734679408784.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"AI role\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AI role<\/a>,\u201d Donadei, now 32 and based in New York, told Business Insider. \u201cI didn\u2019t have the right credentials, and when I spoke with other teams, I felt a disconnect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, he works as a <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/topic\/engineering\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"software engineer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">software engineer <\/a>on Google\u2019s AI safety team \u2014 a role he did not enter through a formal AI degree or promotion.<\/p>\n<p>What changed inside Google after ChatGPT?<\/p>\n<p>Donadei says the shift began when <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/topic\/chatgpt\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"ChatGPT\u2019\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ChatGPT\u2019<\/a>s launch pushed Google to move faster on large language models. When Google announced its seven-day internal hackathon in 2024, he saw an opportunity to work on what he called \u201cthe hottest topic in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What did he actually build?<\/p>\n<p>During the event, Donadei created a small prototype and presented a demo at the end. He says the aim was never to build something groundbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t do anything revolutionary,\u201d Donadei said. \u201cI built a small prototype that wasn\u2019t super useful, but it was a good way to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The experience forced him to learn unfamiliar tools, including LLM infrastructure, agent-based workflows and model fine-tuning \u2014 \u201cThe things that are less sexy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t just do a hackathon and stop there,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have to actually leverage that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of shelving the project, he actively spoke about it. He contacted technical leads across Google to present his work, using short meetings to see whether it matched their teams\u2019 goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey tend to have a high-level view,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>These discussions helped him expand his internal network and clearly explain how his work fit into Google\u2019s wider AI plans.<\/p>\n<p>What happened after the first hackathon?<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, Donadei took part in another hackathon. He uses AI tools daily to speed up his understanding.<\/p>\n<p>He relies on Claude Code to read documentation, Gemini and ChatGPT Deep Research for case studies, and NotebookLM to handle large volumes of information. He also watches Andrej Karpathy\u2019s YouTube lectures and co-hosts a podcast on software engineering and AI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing it mostly because it\u2019s the most proactive way for us to keep learning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Was it luck \u2014 or something more?<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Donadei does not describe his transition as pure luck. Instead, he believes action made the difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy granting me unlimited access to frontier technologies and a direct line to key decision-makers,\u201d he said, \u201cthe hackathon proved that I wasn\u2019t late to the AI revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When Emrick Donadei first joined Google, artificial intelligence was not part of his role.
