{"id":267977,"date":"2026-01-05T07:12:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T07:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/267977\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T07:12:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T07:12:07","slug":"taoiseach-calls-for-more-open-trade-during-visit-to-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/267977\/","title":{"rendered":"Taoiseach calls for more open trade during visit to China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing at the start of a four-day official visit to China.<\/p>\n<p>During his audience with Mr Xi in the capital&#8217;s Great Hall this morning, the Taoiseach referenced the strong trade relationship between Ireland and China, and called for more open trade between the countries.<\/p>\n<p>He also acknowledged what he called China\u2019s indispensable role in the world, highlighting the country\u2019s work at the UN.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President Xi said there should be increased co-operation between the countries in areas such as AI and the digital economy.<\/p>\n<p>The two also discussed Ireland\u2019s bilateral relationship with China, including economic ties, as well as broader EU-China relations.<\/p>\n<p>Later the Taoiseach toured Beijing\u2019s Forbidden City.<\/p>\n<p>Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was the home of Chinese emperors for more than 500 years up until the 1920s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin touring the Forbidden City in China \" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0023b203-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nTaoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin touring the Forbidden City in China<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin touring the Forbidden City in China \" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0023b204-614.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The visit comes amid increased trade tension between the EU and China, which has led to higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles entering the single market as well as a new tariff on EU dairy products being sold in China.<\/p>\n<p>It is also happening at a time of heightened global trade tensions spurred by a raft of tariffs placed on trading partners by US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>While in Beijing, the Taoiseach is also meeting Irish and Chinese business leaders, and representatives of 12 Irish colleges in the city.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Mr Martin will travel to China\u2019s commercial hub in Shanghai, where he will meet the city\u2019s mayor and business groups in sectors such as tourism and food &amp; beverages.<\/p>\n<p>He is scheduled to return to Ireland on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first visit to China by a sitting Taoiseach since 2012, however, Mr Martin visited the country in 2023 in his capacity as T\u00e1naiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The Taoiseach said during his meetings with officials he will raise &#8220;pressing global challenges including peace and security and the trading environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will stress the importance of a strong EU-China relationship, as well as robust and effective multilateral institutions,&#8221;
