From chart-topper to TV actor, Peter Andre has reignited a long-held-passion in The Sunshine Murders. \u201cI did acting as a kid first,\u201d he says, \u201cThen I got signed up with the music, and I took off with it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now appearing in Channel 5<\/a>\u2019s new murder mystery show, the singer and I’m A Celebrity<\/a> star steps into the role of Dr George Constantinos, a Greek pathologist caught up in a mysterious death. For Peter Andre<\/a>, the decision was instant.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought the story was brilliant,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m married to a doctor, you couldn\u2019t ask for anything better to make sure you get the correct terminology.\u201d<\/p>\n The Sunshine Murders has the warmth of a family gathering, something Peter especially values as his own oldest children, Princess<\/a> and Junior<\/a>, grow more comfortable in the spotlight.<\/p>\n \u201cJunior would be more for something like this. Junior is a phenomenal little actor,\u201d says Peter, \u201cHe would be great because he\u2019s Greek but I love that they\u2019re doing their thing.\u201d<\/p>\n READ MORE: Mattress that ‘helps with back pain’ comes with free bedding and saves shoppers \u00a3308<\/a> Originally hired for a single episode, his role expanded dramatically after auditioning. \u201cInitially, it was just for one episode,\u201d he says, \u201cI had to do my audition in my normal Australian accent and when I did the tape, I thought, \u2018why don\u2019t I just put on an accent?\u2019 I hadn\u2019t heard back immediately so I thought they didn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n Peter eventually received news from series creator Emily Corcoran herself. \u201cI got a message from Emily and her mum, who I adore,\u201d Peter says, \u201cThey both said, \u2018we\u2019re so impressed with the Greek accent that we want to put you in the whole series.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Emily isn\u2019t just the show\u2019s creator – she also stars in it as Shirley, a no-nonsense New Zealand farmer who bursts into the life of Greek detective Helen Moustakas, claiming to be her half-sister.<\/p>\n \u201cShe’s based on women that I grew up with in New Zealand,\u201d Emily says. \u201cI always admired New Zealand women’s practicality. They’re not really bothered by a lot of things. European women are.\u201d<\/p>\n Helen is sceptical of Shirley\u2019s sudden arrival, but when an archeologist turns up dead, Shirley proves surprisingly valuable. \u201cShe\u2019s not hiding secrets,\u201d says Emily.<\/p>\n \u201cBut Shirley does have a quiet determination and starts to uncover a lot of exciting twists.\u201d Dr George quickly becomes central to Helen\u2019s questions about her family as he\u2019s determined to help them untangle the truths about the crime – and perhaps even their own connection.<\/p>\n For Peter, playing George was personal. He based the character\u2019s dialect on his father Savvas. \u201cI’m Cypriot. When you’re speaking in Greek in a show that’s based in Athens, your Greek has to be spot on. I had to adopt a different dialect,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n \u201cAll I did really was think of my dad, because that is exactly how my dad talks. He is an older version of George. Except he’s less geeky than the character.\u201d<\/p>\n Emily, too, has ties to Greece<\/a>. At 17, she left school to travel across Europe, later studying drama alongside Dora Chrysikou – the actress now portraying Helen Moustakas in The Sunshine Murders.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was my best friend at drama school and we\u2019ve remained friends,\u201d Emily says, \u201cThe inception of this happened at a drama school reunion in 2023, because she\u2019s become quite famous in Greece. We love each other terribly but can\u2019t see each other that much.\u201d<\/p>\n Like this story?
