{"id":269421,"date":"2026-01-06T01:49:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T01:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/269421\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T01:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T01:49:09","slug":"irish-woman-takes-up-role-as-head-of-european-drugs-agency-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/269421\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish woman takes up role as head of European drugs agency \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish doctor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/health-pharma\/irish-regulator-elected-chairwoman-of-european-medicines-agency-1.4830354\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/health-pharma\/irish-regulator-elected-chairwoman-of-european-medicines-agency-1.4830354\">Lorraine Nolan<\/a> has taken over as head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> Drugs Agency (EUDA), the Lisbon-based organisation that provides independent research and analysis on all aspects of drug use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Elected to the position last June, Dr Nolan succeeds Belgium\u2019s Alex Goosdeel, who led the organisation for a decade. She is the organisation\u2019s fourth executive director and the first woman to hold the position. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since 2016 she had been chief executive of Ireland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-products-regulatory-authority\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/health-products-regulatory-authority\/\">Health Products Regulatory Authority<\/a> (HPRA) and is credited with having led it through a period of reorganisation and expansion during a period that included the challenges of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brexit\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/brexit\/\">Brexit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/covid-19\/\">Covid-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Nolan had worked for the HPRA since 2001, having previously held a number of roles in both the private and public sectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time of her election to lead the EUDA, Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> said Dr Nolan was \u201cexceptionally well qualified\u201d to lead the organisation having \u201cserved with distinction as the chief executive of the HPRA\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taking up the role on Monday, Dr Nolan, who completed her PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry at Trinity College Dublin, said it was \u201ca great honour to take on the leadership of the EUDA at this exciting stage of its development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBy promoting collaboration across national, European and international partners and communities, we can enhance resilience, improve preparedness and support healthier, safer societies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe agency has a long history of scientific excellence.
