{"id":269457,"date":"2026-01-06T02:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T02:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/269457\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T02:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T02:19:07","slug":"gary-neville-shocked-by-speed-of-ruben-amorims-manchester-united-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/269457\/","title":{"rendered":"Gary Neville shocked by speed of Ruben Amorim\u2019s Manchester United exit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gary Neville insists the speed of Ruben Amorim\u2019s departure from Manchester United came as a \u201cshock\u201d after the Portuguese was sacked on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Amorim leaves with United positioned sixth in the Premier League, Sunday\u2019s draw at Leeds coming five days after a dismal 1-1 home stalemate against basement club Wolves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The 40-year-old has the lowest win percentage \u2013 31.9% \u2013 of the seven managers who have taken charge at Old Trafford since Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Former United defender Neville told Sky Sports News: \u201cWhen a manager is sacked, it\u2019s a poor reflection on everybody. It means it\u2019s not worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cUltimately everyone loses, particularly when you are sacking a manager partway through the season. It\u2019s very difficult to get an adequate replacement in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI am surprised it\u2019s happened this morning, I\u2019m not surprised it\u2019s happened. I didn\u2019t realise it would happen so quickly. I did think they\u2019d get through another couple of weeks and try and work out what to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut obviously it\u2019s become that challenging internally that they decided to do it very quickly, which was a shock this morning when I heard the news at 10 o\u2019clock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf you look at some of the performances in the last month, they\u2019ve really been shocking. However, there have been some bright spots along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe Wolves game seems to me to be the killer game. It was a bad one, that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand admits that while United\u2019s record under Amorim has been disappointing, he did not expect him to leave so soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The 47-year-old told his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel: \u201cHe wouldn\u2019t have been on my first three or four or five people that I would have put as managers to get the sack right now in the league, so I am surprised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut when you look at his record in black and white, I\u2019m not surprised, which is weird, and it sounds weird when I say that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Amorim\u2019s explosive comments in his press conference after Sunday\u2019s 1-1 draw at Leeds raised doubts over his own future by hinting at disharmony behind the scenes at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He insisted he was the manager rather than head coach and urged United\u2019s scouting department and sporting director to \u201cdo their job\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Former United midfielder Paul Scholes feels Amorim \u201ctalked himself into it\u201d by questioning the club\u2019s hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Scholes believes United should make an approach for England boss Thomas Tuchel after the World Cup to take up the Old Trafford hotseat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think Tuchel is one of the very best out there,\u201d Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast with former United team-mate Nicky Butt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe would be my number one target \u2013 and his contract with England is only until the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think he can be a bit temperamental and he could be quite difficult to handle, but he has done it at big clubs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Former England striker Gary Lineker said Amorim was the wrong man to manage a club that he described as a \u201cbasket case\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think it was almost as though he provoked it,\u201d Lineker told the Rest Is Football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt didn\u2019t seem to be the right fit and he was a bit stubborn about the way he wanted to play. The players didn\u2019t suit the way he plays and the club should have recognised that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI suspect they haven\u2019t supported him in the sense of bringing in the players he would have wanted in certain positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAlso, it\u2019s been bit of a basket case of a football club over the last few years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">United defender Harry Maguire wished Amorim well on Instagram, posting a photo of the two of them clasping hands accompanied by the message: \u201cThank you for everything boss. I wish you all the best in the future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Maguire\u2019s team-mate Bruno Fernandes also used social media to say farewell to the Portuguese. \u201cThank you, Mister! I wish you and your technical staff all the best,\u201d he wrote on Instagram stories.
