Chinese artificial intelligence start-up DeepSeek<\/a> has updated the user interface of its flagship chatbot by adding an advanced \u201cthinking\u201d feature, as its app recorded a massive 90 per cent jump in monthly active users (MAU) in December.The upgrades, including a deep research mode similar to OpenAI<\/a>\u2019s namesake product, marked a rare improvement on the consumer side for the Hangzhou-based firm at a time when anticipation was building over its next-generation models<\/a>, analysts said.<\/p>\n

DeepSeek\u2019s website and mobile app have both started offering an advanced search function called \u201cinterleaved thinking\u201d, in which the chatbot performs multi-step research with \u201cthinking\u201d interspersed throughout the process.<\/p>\n

Previously, the chatbot would \u201cthink\u201d through a prompt provided by a user before generating a response. The \u201cinterleaved\u201d allows the model to \u201cthink\u201d between each action, strengthening its research capabilities.<\/p>\n

This process is integral to powerful research tools like OpenAI\u2019s Deep Research, which can handle complex queries. For instance, after opening a webpage, the model may need to \u201cthink\u201d about the credibility of the information it reads before deciding whether to consult another document to verify the findings.<\/p>\n

A test by the Post showed that DeepSeek\u2019s chatbot does not always deploy this \u201cdeep research\u201d mode unless prompted with complicated queries.
