She even offered him the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nobel-prize\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nobel-prize\/\">Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> she was awarded in October, a prize Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/10\/12\/maureen-dowd-nobel-prize-not-designed-for-someone-such-as-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/10\/12\/maureen-dowd-nobel-prize-not-designed-for-someone-such-as-donald-trump\/\">coveted for years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBecause this is the prize of the Venezuelan people, certainly we want to give it to him and share it with him,\u201d Machado told Fox News host Sean Hannity. She said that she had not spoken to Trump since October, when she dedicated the prize to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump has chosen to conditionally back Maduro\u2019s vice-president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/01\/05\/who-is-the-woman-backed-by-trump-to-lead-venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/01\/05\/who-is-the-woman-backed-by-trump-to-lead-venezuela\/\">Delcy Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>, as interim leader instead of Machado or Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez, who ran after Machado was barred from being a candidate. Machado and Gonz\u00e1lez have said that he is the legitimate president of Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe doesn\u2019t have the support within, or the respect within, the country,\u201d Trump said of Machado on Saturday. \u201cShe\u2019s a very nice woman, but she doesn\u2019t have the respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Senior US officials, including secretary of state Marco Rubio, had convinced Trump that Venezuela could be further destabilised if the United States tried to back the opposition. A classified CIA intelligence analysis reflected that view, according to a person familiar with the document.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Monday, Machado said the opposition would turn Venezuela into a security ally of the United States and an energy hub for the Americas, provide protection for foreign investment and repatriate millions of Venezuelans who had fled the country under Maduro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/americas\/2026\/01\/05\/venezuelas-acting-president-strikes-conciliatory-tone-with-us-after-trump-warning\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venezuela\u2019s acting president strikes conciliatory tone with US after Trump warningOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe will leave behind all the destruction this socialist regime, criminal regime has brought to our people and turn Venezuela into the main ally of the United States in Latin America,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">How Machado\u2019s movement could be allowed to govern is unclear. Trump has not indicated if new elections will be held in Venezuela, saying only that the United States was \u201cin charge\u201d of the country. In December, she secretly left Venezuela to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/10\/10\/maria-corina-machado-named-as-this-years-nobel-peace-prize-winner-despite-lobbying-by-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2025\/10\/10\/maria-corina-machado-named-as-this-years-nobel-peace-prize-winner-despite-lobbying-by-trump\/\">receive the Nobel Peace Prize<\/a> in Norway.
