Paris Hilton<\/strong> has said the media<\/strong> was \u201ccruel<\/strong>\u201d to her as a young woman, and that despite a lot of change in the industry, more needs to be done about the way people are treated.<\/p>\n

The Hilton Hotel heiress, 44, rose to fame in the 2000s reality TV series The Simple Life alongside Nicole Richie, where they left their glamorous LA lifestyles to live with normal families and try different careers.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the Press Association, she spoke about the \u201charassment\u201d she faced from the media as a young woman in the limelight, and the impact it had on her.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cBack then the media was so cruel to myself and to a few other women and it just felt like harassment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was entertainment for people back then and the things that people would say to us would not be accepted today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it has changed a lot but I can see that some people just haven\u2019t got that memo and are continuing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere definitely needs to be work done but at least it is evolving in a more positive way for people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has often been criticised for being a \u201cdumb blonde\u201d, which she has since said was a persona she created as \u201carmour\u201d to protect herself.<\/p>\n

Her new documentary, Infinite Icon: A Visual Memoir, follows her return to music.<\/p>\n

A 2020 documentary, This Is Paris, made headlines when she disclosed that she was physically and psychologically abused while at boarding schools for troubled teenagers.<\/p>\n

She has since become an avid activist in the US, speaking out against the treatment programmes in the \u201ctroubled teen industry\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cThe character and the persona that I created was an armour and a shield to really protect me, because I\u2019d been through so much and nobody knew that, and I felt like I just was playing this character, so that I wouldn\u2019t really have to go deep or go into what I had been through, because I wasn\u2019t ready at that point.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I kind of pull out the character sometimes, not as a protection, more as just the silly fun side of me.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople know that it is a character, I love that people know that there is a lot more to me than that, and a lot of a deeper, more intelligent person.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll always be a part of me and I think a lot of people in the entertainment industry have their character, or kind of like the mask that they put on when they\u2019re entertaining.\u201d<\/p>\n

The DJ and businesswoman and her husband, Carter Reum, are the parents of two young children, and she describes herself as very \u201cprotective\u201d of them.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cBecoming a mother has just been my greatest joy in life.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy two babies are my world and just bring me so much love and happiness. We just have so much fun together.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing the world through their eyes and going to Disneyland together, and celebrating the holidays with them and just seeing how excited they get for everything, it\u2019s everything to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to have found such an amazing husband and to have created this beautiful life together, because the babies are everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a mother, I\u2019m so protective and I think that\u2019s another reason why I use my voice so much, especially having a daughter, because I don\u2019t ever want her to feel the way that I did or to go through the things that I went through.\u201d<\/p>\n
