{"id":270335,"date":"2026-01-06T13:31:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T13:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/270335\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T13:31:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T13:31:12","slug":"factbox-governments-regulators-increase-scrutiny-of-deepseek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/270335\/","title":{"rendered":"Factbox-Governments, regulators increase scrutiny of DeepSeek"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Jan 6 (Reuters) &#8211; Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which said in January it had developed an AI model to rival ChatGPT at much lower cost, has come under scrutiny in some countries for its security policies and privacy practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">According to \u200bits own privacy policy, DeepSeek stores numerous pieces of personal data, such as requests to its AI programme or uploaded \u200cfiles, on computers in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Below are countries&#8217; actions regarding DeepSeek:<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">AUSTRALIA<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">In early February, Australia banned DeepSeek from all government devices over concerns that it posed security risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">CZECH REPUBLIC<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The Czech government \u200cbanned in July the country&#8217;s public administration from using any of the services of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek due to data security concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">FRANCE<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">France&#8217;s privacy watchdog said in January 2025 it will question DeepSeek to gain a better idea of how the Chinese startup&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:AI system;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI system<\/a> works and any possible privacy risks for users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">GERMANY<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Germany has asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/organizations\/apple\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Apple;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple<\/a> and Google to remove DeepSeek from their stores due to concerns about data safety, a data protection \u2060authority commissioner said in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">INDIA<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">India&#8217;s finance ministry asked \u200cits employees at the beginning of February to avoid using AI tools including ChatGPT and DeepSeek for official purposes, citing risks posed to confidentiality of government documents and data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">ITALY<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Italy&#8217;s antitrust watchdog AGCM has ended an investigation \u200dinto the Chinese AI system DeepSeek for allegedly failing to warn users that it may produce false information, agreeing to binding commitments as a condition for closing the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">In January of 2025, it blocked the app citing a lack of information on its use of personal data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">NETHERLANDS<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The Netherlands&#8217; privacy watchdog at the \u200bend of January said it would launch an investigation into Chinese artificial intelligence firm DeepSeek&#8217;s data collection practices and urged Dutch users \u200cto exercise caution with the company&#8217;s software.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The government has also banned civil servants from using the app, citing policy regarding countries with an offensive cyber program, the government spokesperson said in late July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">RUSSIA<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Russia&#8217;s President Vladimir Putin in early February instructed Sberbank to collaborate with Chinese researchers on joint AI projects, a top executive at Russia&#8217;s biggest bank told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">SOUTH KOREA<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">South Korea&#8217;s data protection authority said in mid-February that new downloads of the DeepSeek app had been suspended in the country after the startup acknowledged failing to take into account some of the agency&#8217;s \u2060rules on protecting personal data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Earlier in February, the industry minister had temporarily blocked \u200bemployee access to DeepSeek due to security concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The service became available again at the \u200bend of April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">TAIWAN<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Taiwan in February banned government departments from using DeepSeek&#8217;s service as it saw it as a security risk.
