{"id":270597,"date":"2026-01-06T16:47:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T16:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/270597\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T16:47:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T16:47:07","slug":"irish-colleges-teaching-chinese-students-is-not-a-security-risk-says-taoiseach-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/270597\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish colleges teaching Chinese students is not a security risk, says Taoiseach \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Taoiseach has defended Irish higher education institutions\u2019 engagement with China, rejecting the suggestion that teaching Chinese students represents a security risk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking in Beijing on the second day of a four-day visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/china\/\">China<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> said  the programmes operated in China by Irish third-level colleges was good for the students and institutions in both countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cUniversities have been involved for quite a long time with universities in China, and the undergraduate programmes don\u2019t in any shape have any security risks attached to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cAnd the arrangements, from a practical point of view, are of benefit, financially and otherwise, to the Irish universities. But also there\u2019s no great sensitive research in the context of security issues or anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Thirteen Irish third-level institutions operate 110 joint programmes with colleges in China that involve Irish lecturers teaching on Chinese campuses. The joint programmes award degrees and diplomas that are recognised both in China and in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/04\/taoiseach-talks-with-xi-in-beijing-expected-to-focus-on-eu-china-relationship-and-trade\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taoiseach talks with Xi in Beijing expected to focus on EU-China relationship and tradeOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> Last month, in an anonymous briefing to the Sunday Times, a senior figure in the Irish Military Intelligence Service suggested that Irish academic links to China could pose a security risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cIt can be hugely detrimental to the West if you empower them by educating them simply because they come to a university with funds. This can be hugely detrimental to the West if you teach them how to twist a knot to the left or right, which helps them to develop a weapon or military application,\u201d the intelligence officer told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> The Taoiseach received full ceremonial honours with a military guard and band at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday when he met Premier Li Qiang. Earlier, he met Zhao Leji, the chairman of the National People\u2019s Congress, China\u2019s legislature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> During his meetings in Beijing, starting with President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/xi-jinping\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/xi-jinping\/\">Xi Jinping<\/a>, the Taoiseach discussed the relationship between the European Union and China, which is under pressure due to trade tensions and Beijing\u2019s diplomatic support for Russia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he was open to China\u2019s suggestion of a new framework for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eu\/\">EU<\/a>-China relationship but said it was for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-commission\/\">European Commission<\/a> and EU member states to determine how to proceed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cIt\u2019s logical at some stage that the European Union and China will have to resolve trading issues, just like we have with the United States, for example, where there were very significant issues at the beginning of last year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cLikewise, issues have emerged in terms of rare minerals, in terms of EVs, in terms of agricultural products, and we\u2019ve experienced that.
