{"id":271025,"date":"2026-01-06T22:12:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T22:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/271025\/"},"modified":"2026-01-06T22:12:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T22:12:08","slug":"man-32-appears-in-court-charged-with-murder-of-donegal-businessman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/271025\/","title":{"rendered":"Man (32) appears in court charged with murder of Donegal businessman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <strong>man <\/strong>has appeared in court charged with the <strong>murder <\/strong>of <strong>Stephen McCahill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 66-year-old married father-of-two was found dead outside his home at Beagh, Ardara in the early hours of Monday morning last following what garda\u00ed described as a fatal assault.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Maloney, 32, of Loughros Point, Ardara, appeared before Judge Ciaran Liddy at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The accused, a nephew of the late Mr McCahill by marriage, was charged that on January 5th, at Beagh, Ardara, he did murder Stephen McCahill.<\/p>\n<p>The charge is Contrary to Common Law and as provided for by Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1964.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney, dressed in a dark-coloured hoodie and baseball cap, was arrested at a separate location a short time after the body of Mr McCahill was found around 3.50am on January 5th.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"343\" width=\"467\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/man-32-appears-in-court-charged-with-murder-of-donegal-businessman.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\" wp-image-1849511 aligncenter fixed-width-container\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Michael Maloney, who was charged with the murder of former Donegal Person of the Year, Stephen McCahill. Photo: Joe Boland, North West Newspix.<\/p>\n<p>He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in Donegal, where he was questioned by detectives.<\/p>\n<p>The accused, a popular musician with more than 15 million streams on Spotify, was handcuffed when brought into Letterkenny Courthouse flanked by detectives.<\/p>\n<p>He will also be known to many for his hit song &#8220;What Do You Want To Know&#8221;, which he performed at the Limerick hurling team&#8217;s All-Ireland homecoming celebration in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>A number of senior members of An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na based in Donegal were also present in court.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Garda Patrick Kelly of Donegal Town Garda Station gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Maloney.<\/p>\n<p>He told the court he arrested Maloney at 2.25pm and charged him at 3.35pm. He cautioned Maloney, but the accused made no reply to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitor for the accused, Mark Mullaney, made an application for legal aid, stating that his client was in receipt of social welfare.<\/p>\n<p>He also said his client has a diagnosed psychiatric illness and requested that he be given daily medication in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Garda Sergeant Jim Collins asked the court to have the accused remanded in custody to appear by videolink to Letterkenny District Court next Monday, January 12th.<\/p>\n<p>As the accused is charged with murder, there was no application for bail.<\/p>\n<p>Maloney was taken from the court by detectives and will be detained at Castlerea Prison.<\/p>\n<p>A post mortem was due to take place today on the late Mr McCahill.<\/p>\n<p>No details of his funeral arrangements have yet been disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"not-prose no-underline\" data-action=\"click\" data-category=\"Read more article clicked\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/donegal-businessman-killed-in-fatal-assault-had-massive-flair-and-drive-for-community-1849011.html\" data-value=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breakingnews.ie\/ireland\/donegal-businessman-killed-in-fatal-assault-had-massive-flair-and-drive-for-community-1849011.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>        <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/mccahillmcnelis-dir-1-e1767634653395.jpg\" class=\"rounded-sm object-contain bg-transparent z-10 w-full h-full not-prose\" alt=\"Donegal Businessman Killed In Fatal Assault Had 'Massive Flair And Drive' For Community\" width=\"278\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<p>        Ireland<\/p>\n<p>Donegal businessman killed in fatal assault had &#8216;massive flair and drive&#8217; for community<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Numerous tributes have been made to the businessman who co-owned the Corner House bar in Ardara and who was also an auctioneer.<\/p>\n<p>Among the tributes was one from popstar Imelda May, who was in Mr McCahill&#8217;s bar last Saturday night and was pictured with the publican.<\/p>\n<p>Donegal&#8217;s first All-Ireland GAA captain and Donegal County Councillor, Anthony Molloy, also paid tribute to Mr McCahill, describing him as a true friend.<\/p>\n<p>Mr McCahill is survived by his wife Marietta, his grown-up children Stephen and Gemma, extended family and a wide circle of friends.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Stephen McCahill.
